The lyrics of the song relate to the Irish practice of gathering seaweed, which has been done for various purposes, including as fertilizer, bathing, and food.[1]

The song title was used in 2016 as the name for an Irish music and dance show called Шаблон:Ill, which competed in the finals of the German talent show Das Supertalent in 2017.[2]

The song was used both on its own and as a motif of the 2014 Irish animated film "Song of the Sea".
