"I Feel It Coming" is a song by the Canadian singer the Weeknd featuring the French electronic duo Daft Punk, from his third studio album, Starboy (2016). It was released for digital download as the album's third single on November 18, 2016. It was later promoted as the album's second radio single, being sent to UK contemporary hit radio on November 24, 2016. The song was written and produced by the Weeknd, Daft Punk, Doc McKinney, and Cirkut, with Eric Chedeville receiving writing credits.
"I Feel It Coming" is a disco-pop song which lyrically discuss the themes of love and lust, where he reassures his lover after their failed relationships and trauma. Music journalists complimented the song's vocals and production, drawing comparisons to the works of Michael Jackson. Commercially, "I Feel It Coming" peaked within the top ten in more than twenty countries, including number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, and at the top spot in Daft Punk's native France. The song received a 6× platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America on April 5, 2022, for selling more than six million units in the United States.
Background & release
Following the commercial success of his second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness (2015), the Weeknd started to record new music in May 2016, inviting Mark Guiducci of Vogue to Conway Recording Studios, and revealed that him and the team who produced his debut mixtape, House of Balloons (2011), were recording new material,[1] telling Guidacci that the material being made could be "an album or it could be something else, but whatever it is, music is being made.”[2] During an interview with Billboard on July 15, 2016, the executive vice president for Republic Records, Wendy Goldstein, revealed that the Weeknd and the French duo Daft Punk were set to have a session two days from then.[3]
On September 21, 2016, the Weeknd announced his third studio album, Starboy. The album's title track, featuring Daft Punk, was released as the album's lead single on the same day.[4]
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal on November 4, 2016, the Weeknd revealed that his and Daft Punk's recording sessions together had led to the making of another song alongside the title track, which was to be included on the album.[5] On November 17, he announced StarboyШаблон:'s third single, "I Feel It Coming", featuring Daft Punk, and its fourth single, "Party Monster". Alongside the announcement, he showcased the cover art for the songs, which were released the following day.[6]
"I Feel It Coming" was pushed as StarboyШаблон:'s second radio single in tandem with the album's release on November 24, 2016, being sent to the contemporary hit radio format in the United Kingdom.[7] It was later promoted in the United States, being sent to the rhythmic contemporary format on December 6, 2016.[8]
Music and recording
Шаблон:Multiple image In an interview with Zane Lowe, the Weeknd talked about recording with Daft Punk, stating that he had first met one half of Daft Punk, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, at a party in Los Angeles. The Weeknd further talked about how he met Homem-Christo in an interview with VarietyШаблон:'s Jem Aswad, stating,Шаблон:Blockquote He then went to a recording studio in Paris with Daft Punk, where they presented him with the draft instrumental for "I Feel It Coming". After freestyling over the instrumental, the Weeknd wrote the lyrics for the song in one hour, and started to record the song. He told Lowe that Daft Punk wanted his vocals to sound as "authentic and retro" as possible, with the duo directing him through the process. He temporarily put off the song, after hearing the drum beat for "Starboy", and writing the lyrics for the song.[9] In the interview with Variety, the Weeknd stated that him and Daft Punk finished the two songs in four days.[10] One of the producers of the song, Doc McKinney, revealed that "I Feel It Coming" was mainly recorded in Los Angeles with live musicians. Although him and another producer for the song, Cirkut, weren't at the recording sessions for the song, McKinney stated that they did further work on the song at Conway Recording Studios.[11] The song's placement on the album's tracklist was revealed to not have been chosen until November 2016, during an interview with The Guardian.[12]
"I Feel It Coming" is a disco-pop song,[13][14][15] with elements of funk.[16] The song's sheet music, published by Songs Music Publishing at Musicnotes.com, shows that the song is written in the key of E-flat major and follows a tempo of 93 beats per minute in [[Duple and quadruple metre|compound duple (Шаблон:Music) time]]. The vocals in the song span from the low note of E♭4 to the high note of B♭5.[17]
Lyrically, "I Feel It Coming" has been described as the Weeknd's "lustful approach to sex," in which he reassures the person he desires to not be afraid of falling in love again.[18] The song's first verse opens with the Weeknd asking his lover to tell him what they "really like", in which ComplexШаблон:'s Ross Scarano describes as being sung in a way that doesn't sound like the Weeknd will insist the listener "really like[s] anonymous sex in a cramped bathroom stall followed by a crying jag." [19] The pre-chorus has the Weeknd persuade his lover to trust him, singing: "You’ve been scared of love and what it did to you / You don’t have to run, I know what you’ve been through,"[20] which Spin further added on, describing the lines a "crisp, convincing ode" to a heartbroken lover, who the Weeknd attempts to persuade into trying him out.[21] He further reassures his lover, telling them: "Just a simple touch and it can set you free / we don’t have to rush when you’re alone with me."[22] The song has a five-note chorus, which repeats the title of the song, "I feel it coming/I feel it coming, babe."[13]
Critical reception
Music journalists complimented the vocals and production of "I Feel It Coming", with the Weeknd's vocals drawing comparisons to Michael Jackson. Sam Wolfson of The Guardian named the song as the "track of the week", stating that the song sounded like "Michael Jackson singing over a Shalamar beat". Wolfson criticized that there was "probably not one original idea" in the song, but further stated that it did not matter due to its "spectacular" execution. He complimented the Weeknd's vocals, saying it was "pained and perfect over a bassline that sounds like it has a soul."[23] PopMatters staff gave the track a score of 7.75 out of 10, one staff writing; "The Weeknd sounds more like Michael Jackson than ever as he glides up to those high notes."[24] Delenda Joseph of Uproxx wrote that the Weeknd's vocals were similar to Michael Jackson's, stating that the song may as well have said "featuring Michael Jackson." Joseph later called the song "a straight up dance jam perfect for your weak attempts at recreating [Jackson's] footwork in the comfort of your bathroom."[25] In a more mixed review, Angus Harrison of Vice called the song "enchantingly average," and referred to it as "Daft Punk's magnum opus", calling the song a "four and [a] half minute slab of Kiss-FM pop about female orgasms." He described the song's instrumental as "clean", and further wrote that the song could "herald a new era for chintzy disco-pop". He further stated that although the song was "so ostensibly unimpressive," it was "equally so beguiling."[13]
In Rolling StoneШаблон:'s review of Starboy, Mosi Reeves commended the track, stating that, ""I Feel It Coming," is a gem of Ibiza disco love... [it] is surprisingly sunny and fresh".[14] Reviewing the album for Pitchfork, Mehan Jayasuriya wrote that "both of the Daft Punk collaborations are satisfying, if hardly groundbreaking", describing the song as "a slowed-down version of 'Get Lucky'".[26] Reviewing the album track-by-track, The IndependentШаблон:'s Christopher Hooton praised the song and said, "the Daft Punk-featuring track initially fall[s] in with Michael Jackson and Toto on a Venn diagram but, crucially, [is] thrown off kilter by a melancholy keyboard line low in the mix in the chorus. [It] could definitely become an iconic track".[27]
In year-end lists, Entertainment Weekly ranked "I Feel It Coming" at number 51 on its list of their best 100 songs of 2016, calling it a "quest for pop-perfection," and a "sleek and-sexy cut from Starboy."[15] Complex placed the song at number ten on their list of best songs of 2016, with Alex Gardner writing that it would be the track from the Starboy album to be played "next year, and the year after, and in ten years time," calling it a "timeless pop song" and likening its disco influence to Daft Punk's 2013 single "Get Lucky".[28] Billboard ranked it at number nine on their 100 best songs of 2017 list, saying that the song "offered hope to lovers who craved more out of a relationship," and praised Daft Punk's production, calling its instrumental "yearning but distinctly danceable."[29] Consequence ranked "I Feel It Coming" as the Weeknd's sixth best song, noting the song's depature from his usual "hedonistic approach to romance," and calling the Weeknd's vocals tender, while describing Daft Punk's production as "nostalgic '80s pop production."[30]
Commercial performance
Following its initial release as a promotional single, the song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 48 on the chart dated December 10, 2016, before rising to number 22 the following week after the release of Starboy.[31] After its official release as a single, the song reached its number four peak on the chart dated April 15, 2017. The song spent 26 weeks on the chart.[32] "I Feel It Coming" was certified 6× platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on April 5, 2022, for selling six million units in the United States.[33] Elsewhere, the song reached the top of the chart in France, and reached the top ten in other countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
Music video
Development
In an interview with Billboard, the director of the music video for "I Feel It Coming", Warren Fu, stated that his elevator pitch for the video was a "love story in a cursed land." He stated that he saw inspiration from people who were entombed in volcano ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, particularly an image of the casting of a man who was reaching out before being buried in ash. For the aesthetic of the video, Fu wanted it to have a more vintage look than his past works, using pink and blue to "reinforce" the overall aesthetic, likening them to the 1980s TV series Knight Rider. Fu stated that when he looked for a female lead, he wanted "balance" between Daft Punk, who both were French and the Weeknd, who was Canadian, so he chose Japanese-American model Kiko Mizuhara to star as the female lead.
The music video was filmed in one day in December 2016, and premiered on March 10, 2017, on the Weeknd's Vevo channel. It stars the Weeknd and Mizuhara, with Daft Punk appearing at the ending of the video.[34] Writing for iHeartRadio, Trey Taylor noted that some scenes in the video shared similarities to the music videos for Michael Jackson's songs, specifically for the 1982 single, "Billie Jean". Taylor further noted that the video takes inspiration from the films 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991).[35]
Synopsis
The video features the Weeknd dancing in a deserted planet, where he waits for a woman (played by Mizuhara) entombed in stone to come back to life so he can serenade her. The woman then appears, glowing, and watches sunsets and dances with the Weeknd.[36] Following an eclipse, the woman returns to her stone state, and to the horror of the Weeknd, crumbles. After seeing a black snake emerge from the rubble, the Weeknd attempts to reach for it before turning into stone himself. He then erodes and is covered by the snow over time. At the end of the video, Daft Punk appears, playing cloaked explorers, finding the remains of the Weeknd.[37]
Live performances
The Weeknd performed "I Feel It Coming" for the first time on November 24, 2016, as a medley with "Starboy" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[38] The song was later performed the following night at the iHeartRadio Canada Jingle Ball.[39] The following year, he performed the song with Daft Punk for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards on February 12, 2017.[40] The Weeknd performed it for the NRJ Music Awards on November 4, 2017.[41] The song was later included in the set list of the Weeknd's Super Bowl LV halftime show, on February 7, 2021.[42]
