She represented Indonesia at the Miss Universe 2023 competition in San Salvador - El Salvador.

Groeneveld previously won Miss Global Indonesia 2018, She represented the Indonesia at the Miss Global 2018 pageant in Manila, The Philippines where she finished in the top 20.

Early life and education

Fabiënne Nicole Groeneveld was born on December 27, 1999, in Spijkenisse, South Holland in The Netherlands,[1] to an Chinese-Indonesian politician and business tycoon, Natalia Cecilia Tanudjaja, and a Dutch professional tennis player and coach, Sven Groeneveld.[2][3] Her mother is the legislative council of the Indonesian Unity Party (Perindo) in East Java province and President Director of the MNC Asia Holding, MNC Corporation and Media Nusantara Citra company, where Groeneveld also taking part as the Head of RCTI production team.[4][5] Her maternal uncle was Indonesian Politician, MNC Corporation and Perindo Party founder Hary Tanoesoedibjo, politician and Miss Indonesia founder Liliana Tanoesoedibjo is her maternal aunt, Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy of The Republic of Indonesia Angela Tanoesoedibjo is her maternal cousin.[6][7] Groeneveld maternal family business was listed by Forbes as the 39th Indonesian richest prominent family in 2022, with total wealth of $1.09 billion.[8]

Groeneveld was born and raised in Spijkenisse and The Hague in the province of South Holland, where she spent her childhood time before the family moved to her mother hometown in Surabaya, East Java - Indonesia in 2010,[9][10] Groeneveld is a polyglot, she fluently speaks Indonesian, Dutch and English.[11]

Groeneveld has attended Pelita Harapan University in Surabaya and graduated in 2017,[12] with a Bachelor of International Business Management (B.IBM).[13][14][15] In 2019, she completed her Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of New South Wales in Sydney - Australia,[12][13][14] and she also completed her Professional certification in Business Administration and Management essentials from the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) in 2021.[12][13][14]

Career and philanthropy

Groeneveld has been an advocate for women empowerment, she is motivated to turn victims of domestic violence into survivors through her platform "Empower Now"', a domestic violence care organization since 2019 during Indonesia's COVID-19 pandemic.[16][17] Graduating with a degrees in International Business and Entrepreneurship, Groeneveld uses her skills to equip and develop survivors with the knowledge and skills to create a new, independent and productive business woman,[18] together she works with the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia in bringing attention to the needs of individuals who are facing on domestic violence and their families, and improving access to intervention facilities, therapies and services, especially for those in the rural areas.[19] Empower Now creates "Sexual Education Hub" programs including eLearning courses and webinars, a specific national program for primary prevention action plan that encourages Indonesian boys and men to be activated on the issue of ending men's violence against women.[20][17]

Groeneveld NGO, Empower Now also advocate for Fight Hunger with the aim of ending Indonesia's hunger and malnutrition in rural communities.[21][17] It is started during her time in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia–apart from studying, Groeneveld was actively involved in social activities by volunteering to cook for homeless shelters with Mission Australia and Wrap with Love organization, upon taking the Miss Universe Indonesia crown home, she resumed her social work with MNC Peduli Indonesia TV program, under her family company MNC Corporation.[16][18][19]

Pageantry

Miss Global Indonesia 2018

On 15 September 2018, Groeneveld was crowned Miss Global Indonesia 2018 at the Jakarta Convention Centre, Jakarta - Indonesia.[22] The finals night comprised competitions in swimwear, evening gown, and two question and answer rounds. She competed with and won over thirty-nine other delegates, and was crowned by outgoing Miss Global Indonesia 2017 Cynthya Monica Rizkyawati by the end of the event.[23][24]

Miss Global 2018

As Miss Global Indonesia 2018, Groeneveld represented Indonesia in her very first International beauty pageant competition,[9][10] Miss Global 2018 in Newport World Resorts Manila - The Philippines on 11 February 2019.[25] During the preliminaries, Groeneveld won two special awards, "Best in Evening Gown" and "Miss Photogenic".[26] During the finals night, Groeneveld eventually was placed in the top 20.[27][28]

Miss Universe Indonesia 2023

In January 2023, she competed for the title of Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 under the new organization headed by Datin Wira Poppy Capella Swastika,[29][30] through an open audition in Jakarta, where she ended up gain the rights to represent Jakarta SCR in the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 competition.[31][32] During the preliminaries, Groeneveld brought home the "Miss Confidently Beautiful" special award.[26][33][34]

The finale coronation night of the pageant was held at the Beach City International Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia, on 3 August 2023. During the final top 3, Groeneveld was asked by Miss Universe Organization representative Shameera Shah; whether she has any important lesson for us to takeaway from technology that impacted Indonesia's young generation.[35][36] She answered:

At the end of the coronation night, Groeneveld successfully defeated other 29 delegates from across Indonesia, she was crowned by the reigning Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel from USA as the new Miss Universe Indonesia 2023.[37][38][39] Groeneveld was crowned with the new Miss Universe Indonesia crown named The Shimmering Hope".[40][41][42]

Controversy

On 8 August 2023, three out of the thirty finalists filed police reports regarding incidents of sexual harassment they experienced during body checking in pageant quarantine days.[43][44][45] This allegation was then taken to legal action, handled directly by the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, where the government then prohibited Groeneveld from representing Indonesia at the Miss Universe 2023 event, at least until this case was legally resolved.[46][47] However, the Miss Universe Organization gave a permission to Groeneveld, to take part in the international competition this year in El Salvador.[48][49] In an Interview with Republika, Groeneveld made a statement that she had not experienced any kind of sexual harassment at the Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 event, however Groeneveld also stated, "I do not support any form of harassment or violence against women, for me beauty pageants are a platform that is used to raise the dignity of a woman".[50][51] Similar statements later emerged from 26 other contestants who felt that they had not experienced any sexual harassment during the pageant.[52][53]

On 12 August 2023, the Miss Universe Organization officially terminated their franchise contract with PT. Capella Swastika Karya which managed to hold Miss Universe Indonesia 2023 pageant, after the sexual harassment scandal.[54][55][56] Which led Groeneveld to be the only and last Miss Universe Indonesia to competed at Miss Universe 2023 pageant under the directory of Datin Wira Poppy Capella Swastika.[57][58][59]

Miss Universe 2023

As the winner of Miss Universe Indonesia 2023, Groeneveld represented Indonesia at the 72nd edition of the Miss Universe competition,[60][61][62] which was held at Gimnasio Nacional José Adolfo Pineda, San Salvador - El Salvador on 18 November 2023.[63][64][65][66]
