In its first season under head coach Bill Kern, the team compiled a 4–4–1 record and outscored opponents by a total of 127 to 94.[1][2] John Shonk was the team captain.[3]
West Virginia was ranked at No. 95 (out of 697 college football teams) in the final rankings under the Litkenhous Difference by Score system for 1940.[4]
The team played its home games at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, West Virginia.
