The 1946 Turin Grand Prix was a Grand Prix motor race held at Valentino Park on 1 September 1946. It is claimed to be the first ever Formula One race, as the race regulations anticipated the official introduction of the new formula on 1 January 1947.
Jean-Pierre Wimille, despite his number one status at Alfa Romeo, was told before the start that he should not win the race, as the team wanted an Italian driver to win what was one of the very few major races happening in Italy that year. Wimille, angry, decided to lead the race from the start, building a big gap over second place runner Achille Varzi. Around 10 laps to go, Wimille received a pitboard from his team, saying "1st Varzi 2nd Wimille". Wimille did not slow down, and stayed firmly in the lead during the final lap. He then stopped on the pit straight just before the finish line, removed his helmet while waiting for Varzi, and crossed the line in second position once Varzi had overtaken him.[1]
