Jim Popp decided to remain as head coach rather than hire a replacement for Don Matthews, who unexpectedly resigned the previous season. The results were unexpected as the Alouettes endured their first losing season since rejoining the league in 1996. In October 2007, quarterback Anthony Calvillo's wife was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's cancer of the lymph glands or nodes; Calvillo took indefinite leave of absence from the team to be with his wife. The Alouettes appeared in the East Semi-Final with backup quarterback Marcus Brady, losing to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and putting an end to a disappointing season.
