A by-thirds Hyndburn Borough Council local election will be held on Thursday 2 May 2024. Approximately one third of the local council's 35 seats fall up for election on that day.Шаблон:Failed verification

Background

Before the election the Conservatives had 16 councillors, with 1 Independent councillor supporting the Conservatives and with 2 Green Party (all formerly Labour) councillors also supporting the Conservatives, and where Labour had only a minority of 16 councillors. 18 or more seats are needed for Overall-Control of the council.

In this election, Labour would be defending 6-ward-seats (where 2 of those seats [Barnfield & Peel], were formerly won by councillors [Caroline Montague & Paddy Short] who both later switched to the Green Party following the May 2022 election) and Conservatives would also be defending 6-ward-seats. All previous winning ward-candidates had only served out the last 3-years of a standard 4-year term in office, since the covid-postponed election in May 2021, which should normally have been held 12-months earlier, back in May 2020.

Council composition

Prior to the election the composition of the council was:

• Conservative 16
• Green Party of England and Wales 2
• Independent 1
• Labour 16

Labour are defending 6-seats and Conservatives are defending 6-seats.

The local Labour and Conservative party's will both run candidates in each of the 12 wards.

Local Election result

The majority grouping of councillors as the headline result of the election, was unchanged; with Conservatives retaining an overall 19-seat majority.

After the election, the composition of the council's 35 seats was -

• Conservative 16
• Green Party of England and Wales 2
• Independent 1
• Labour 16

NB: Four (of 16) Council wards, where seats are NOT up for re-election in 2024, include the following wards – Clayton Le Moors, Huncoat, Immanuel in Oswaldtwistle and Milnshaw in Accrington.
