The village falls within the Barnsley Metropolitan ward of Darton West. Until 1974 it was in the West Riding of Yorkshire.
History
Barugh was formerly a township in the parish of Darton,[1] in 1866 Barugh became a separate civil parish, on 1 April 1938 the parish was abolished and merged with Darton.[2] In 1931 the parish had a population of 3679.[3] It is now in the unparished area of Darton.
