Educated at Marlborough College and Christ Church, Oxford, Carden joined the Sudan Political Service and then served in the Government of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan until Independence.[1] He entered HM Diplomatic Service in 1956.[2] He served as Director of Middle East Centre for Arab Studies between 1969 and 1973. He served as Ambassador to the Yemen (1973–1976) and Ambassador to Sudan (1977–1979).[1]
