Originally designed for freight service, it now pulls excursion trains on the railroad since February 2023.
History
East Broad Top 16 is the fourth Mikado built in June 1916 being used for freight services. It was one of three larger Mikados built with superheaters, piston valves, and Southern valve gear.
The locomotive last ran in March 1956. On August 10, 1985, Joe Kovalchick decided to restore EBT 16 into operating condition, but EBT 14 was chosen instead and returned to service in 1987.[1][2][3]
In December 2011, the East Broad Top Railroad was closed. On February 14, 2020, the railorad reopened, and all the engines are being restored into operating condition. In 2021, the No. 16 was named Nick, after Nick Kovalchick.[4]
On June 24, 2022, the locomotive was in steam for the first time in 67 years.[5][6] On February 1, 2023, No. 16 returned to service[7][8][9] and pulled its first excursion service on February 18 and 19, 2023.[10][11]
On March 2 and 3, 2023, the locomotive pulled the last winter excursion runs.[12][13][14][15][16] In April 2023, the locomotive began to pull the first spring excursion runs, which ended in May 2023.[17][18][19]
On June 15 and 16, 2023, the locomotive pulled the first summer excursion runs. On July 27 and 28, 2023, the locomotive pulled the last summer excursion runs. On August 17 and 18, 2023 the locomotive pulled the first fall excursion runs. On September 14, 15, 16, and 20, 2023, the locomotive pulled the second fall excursion runs.[20][21] On October 26 and 27, 2023 the locomotive pulled the third fall excursion runs.[22][23][24] On November 11, 2023, the locomotive pulled the last fall excursion runs.[25] On December 6, 2023, the locomotive pulled the last excursion service.[26][27] As of 2024, the locomotive will do more excursion runs.[28]
