The song was first released, as "A Fallen Star", by Jim Reeves in 1961. It was written by James Joiner.[2]

It was recorded in early 1964 by Eileen Reid and the Cadets, with Jim Murphy's harmonica opening the song.[3] Recording took place at the Silverpines Studio in Bray.[4]

The song reached Number 1 in the Irish Singles Chart on 29 May 1964, equal with Dickie Rock's "I'm Yours". It was the first song by a woman to reach No. 1 in Ireland.[5]
