François Carrard was a Swiss lawyer and sports administrator who was the first Director-General of the International Olympic Committee.[1] He held the position from 1989 to 2003.[2]
Carrard was also a leading figure in the creation of the World Anti-Doping Agency and advised various international sports federations, including the International Swimming Federation (FINA),[3] FIFA,[4] and the International Boxing Association.[5] He was also chairman of the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation[6] and the Beau Rivage Palace hotel.[7]
He was born in Lausanne in 1938[8] and died in January 2022 aged 83.[2]
