She was ordered on 6 November 1943, and was laid down on 6 September 1944 at the Blohm & Voss yard at Hamburg, as yard number 2524. She was launched on 30 October 1944, and commissioned under the command of Kapitänleutnant Ernst von Witzendorff on 16 January 1945.[1]
Design
Like all Type XXI U-boats, U-2524 had a displacement of Шаблон:Convert when at the surface and Шаблон:Convert while submerged. She had a total length of Шаблон:Convert (o/a), a beam of Шаблон:Convert, and a draught of Шаблон:Convert.Шаблон:Sfn The submarine was powered by two MAN SE supercharged six-cylinder M6V40/46KBB diesel engines each providing Шаблон:Convert, two Siemens-Schuckert GU365/30 double-acting electric motors each providing Шаблон:Convert, and two Siemens-Schuckert silent running GV232/28 electric motors each providing Шаблон:Convert.Шаблон:Sfn
The submarine had a maximum surface speed of Шаблон:Convert and a submerged speed of Шаблон:Convert. When running on silent motors the boat could operate at a speed of Шаблон:Convert. When submerged, the boat could operate at Шаблон:Convert for Шаблон:Convert; when surfaced, she could travel Шаблон:Convert at Шаблон:Convert.Шаблон:Sfn U-2524 was fitted with six Шаблон:Convert torpedo tubes in the bow and four [[2 cm FlaK 30|Шаблон:Convert C/30]] anti-aircraft guns. She could carry twenty-three torpedoes or seventeen torpedoes and twelve mines. The complement was five officers and fifty-two men.Шаблон:Sfn
Service history and fate
U-2524 was commissioned on 16 January 1945 and assigned to the 31st U-boat Flotilla at Hamburg for working up and training.[1] She had not completed this and had carried out no war patrols before being forced to flee the advancing Allied armies.
Sources vary as to her fate: Kemp and Tarrant report she was attacked on 3 May 1945 by Beaufighters from 236 and 254 Squadrons east of Samso and hit with rocket and cannon fire. Kemp states she was left burning and was seen to explode; Tarrant states she survived but was scuttled later.[2][3] However Niestle states simply that she was scuttled on 3 May 1945, in the Kattegat southeast of the island of Fehmarn.[4] One man was killed but the rest of the crew survived.[1]
The wreck is believed to be located at Шаблон:Coord.[4]
