Шаблон:Short description Godefroid Bizimana is Burundian politician currently serving as a presidential adviser. He is a former police chief who was deputy director general of the Burundian police during the presidency of president Pierre Nkurunziza. He was one of the senior government officials who worked for the actualization of the contentious third presidential term of president Nkurunziza. Bizimana was noted for ordering disruption of opposition rallies and arbitrary arrests.[1]
On 23 November 2013, United States president Barack Obama signed an executive order imposing sanctions against Bizimana and three other allies of president Nkuruziza including minister of Public Security Alain Bunyoni, former intelligence chief Godefroid Niyombare and former minister of defense Cyrille Ndayirukiye.[2] The officials were noted for “Undermining democracy or obstructing efforts to achieve a political solution”. The U.S. sanction froze all assets held by the men in the U.S. and barred them from entering any US jurisdiction.[3] The European Union and the African Union imposed similar bans against Bizimana and the three others. On 19 November 2021 and on 25 October 2022, the US[4] and the EU lifted the ban against three of the officials citing an ongoing discussion with the government of Burundi in which Bizimana was serving as a presidential adviser, Alain Bunyoni prime minister and Gervais Ndirakobuca.[5][6]
