On March 3, 2024, a woman inside a clinic in Qom, Iran confronted a cleric after he took photos of her with the intention of reporting her to Iranian authorities for not wearing hijab. The CCT video of the confrontation drew wide criticism of clerics and the Iranian regime. Four people working in the clinic were jailed for posting the video.[1][2][3][4]
Reactions
An Iranian member of the Islamic consultative assembly defended the cleric's actions, saying that a cleric who is a government agent is legally justified in documenting a crime. The Iranian president's advisor for women apologized for the event.[5][6] In their coverage of the story, Fars News claimed the woman had shouted at and attacked the cleric.[7][8][9][10][11]
Iranian activist Gohar Eshghi took the side of the woman on Twitter, posting that "clerics should stop their own murdering and stealing".[12]
The event was reported on by Iran International TV on March 8, International Women's Day.[13]
The cleric is a Mohamamd Esmaili Quran teacher and reciter.[14]
