Шаблон:Short description Шаблон:Use mdy dates Шаблон:Infobox NCAA team season Шаблон:1993 Division I-A independents football standings The 1993 Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team represented the University of Notre Dame in the 1993 college football season.[1] The team was coached by Lou Holtz and played its home games at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana.
On November 13, Notre Dame played Florida State in a matchup of unbeatens, with the two ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the AP Poll. The winner of this game, at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, was certain to play No. 3 Nebraska (which would then move up to No. 2) in the Orange Bowl for the national championship.[2]
The next week, the Fighting Irish faced No. 17 Boston College. Although the Notre Dame offense piled up 427 yards of offense, scored 5 touchdowns, including 22 points in the last 11 minutes, the game would forever be remembered by Boston College's last drive as their kicker, David Gordon, hit a 41-yard field goal as time expired to win it 41–39, ending Notre Dame's bid for an undefeated season. Notre Dame No 1 ranking lasted only one week before losing their last game of the season to Boston College in South Bend and dropping to No 4. Meanwhile, since No 1 Florida State lost on the last play of the game against No 2 Notre Dame in South Bend, they dropped only one spot to No 2. FSU had two remaining games to complete their season with the first being a destruction of NC State, 62-3 and a rout of their long-time rival No, 7 Florida, 33-21. After that win, FSU was once again the No 1 team in America and naturally became the opponent to play No 2 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship where they won,18-16. Notre Dame also played in a New Year's Six bowl, the Cotton Bowl Classic, where they defeated No. 7 Texas A&M.
For some reason, Notre Dame fans thought they should have been picked to play Nebraska and they would have if they had beaten No 17 Boston College. Florida State earned the right to play for the national championship and also the right to receive the trophy after defeating the second-ranked Cornhuskers. They had defeated five teams in the Top 25 and two teams in the Top Ten: #3 Miami, #7 Florida, #13 North Carolina, #15 Virginia and #17 Clemson before defeating #2 Nebraska. Beyond defeating Florida State at home, Notre Dame had only beaten one other ranked team: #3 Michigan in their second game of the season. Just on the basis of their record against five top-25 teams including two top-10 teams, Florida State deserved to be the No 1 team in the nation. There is no possible argument for picking Notre Dame over Florida State to play for the title.
