The Ahir Regiment, also known as the Yadav Regiment, is a proposed infantry regiment of the Indian Army that has been requested by the Yadava community.[1][2]
History
Prime Minister and Defence Minister Role
Yogendra Singh Yadav is a hero of the Battle of Tiger Hill, and for his bravery he received the highest military medal Param Vir Chakra from the Indian government. Now, he is the president of the Ahir Regiment Mission and is leading the protest, meeting the Prime minister and Defence Minister of India several times for the formation in honor to the Ahir Dham battle in 1962.[3][4]
Demand for a new regiment
In Haryana, some Ahir people marched on the Delhi-Gurugram expressway, demanding for the formation of the new regiment.[5] Arvind Kumar Sharma, a Member of Parliament from Rohtak, Haryana,[6] Ashok Gehlot, the current chief minister of Rajasthan,[7] Dinesh Lal Yadav, member of the parliament of Lok Sabha,[8] Kamal Nath, former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and Vivek Tankha wrote letters to the government to form the regiment.[9][10][11]
Rao Inderjit Singh, the Minister of Statistics and Programme Implementation and a member of the parliament from Gurgaon, Haryana, has given full support to the demand for the creation of the Ahir Regiment in the Indian Army.[12][13] Samajwadi Party president and former chief ministers of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav had promised during the 2019 Indian general election to form regiment if he comes to powers.[14][15]
Manoj Jha, a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India from Bihar, has raised the issue on the Ahir regiment to form the regiment due to the historical army background of the community.[16][17] Hanuman Beniwal, a Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha from Nagaur, Rajasthan, has written a letter to Rajnath Singh, the Defence Minister of India, to create a new infantry in the Indian Army for the Yadav community like the caste-based Jat and Rajput Regiments.[18]
Battle Slogan
After the victory in the Ahir Dham war in China in 1962, Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo was first performed by Lata Mangeshkar on Republic Day (26 January 1963) at the National Stadium in New Delhi in the presence of President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.[19]
