As a solution to the time zone discrepancy of the Philippines with China, Dutch East Indies and neighboring territories to ease the trade system, since Mexico became independent from Spain 23 years earlier on September 27, 1821. Claveria ordered that Monday, December 30, 1844, should be followed immediately by Wednesday, January 1, 1845.
• 1858 – U.S. President James Buchanan inaugurates the new transatlantic telegraph cable by exchanging greetings with Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. However, a weak signal forces a shutdown of the service in a few weeks.
