The coat of arms of the Special Region of Yogyakarta or often called golong-gilig is a round (golong) and cylindrical (gilig) emblem consisting of a painting of stars, rice and cotton, a winged monument, a red circle surrounded by the words in Javanese"Rasa suka ngèsthi praja Yogyakarta trus mandhiri" using Javanese script and surrounded by a white circle, and a lotus-topped ompak.
The Javanese writing is a sengkalan (Chronogram) which means the year 1876 on the Javanese calendar and 1945 AD. When the two sengkalan are combined, the meaning becomes "With a sense of joy to build a good and safe Special Region of Yogyakarta that continues to stand tall (independent)." The star on this symbol has the meaning of Ketuhanan yang Maha Esa (Belief in the one and only God), an excerpt on the first Sila (principles) on the Pancasila. Rice and cotton as a symbol of prosperity. The winged monument as a symbol of humanity, the inner wings numbered 9 addressed to Hamengkubuwono IX and the outer numbered 8 addressed to Paku Alam VIII has the meaning of leadership. Red and white circle for the symbol of nationality. Umpak with lotus flower placemat as a symbol of populism.[2]
Motto
The Special Region of Yogyakarta has a motto of "Hamemayu Hayuning Bawana" which translated in Indonesian means "Beautifying the Beauty of the World".
