The Communication University of Zhejiang (Шаблон:Zh) is a national public college in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China. It is one of the two leading universities in China specializing in cultivating professionals, talents, and other specialists for China's media and broadcast industry.[1] It is affiliated with the National Radio and Television Administration (国家广播电视总局)and the Province of Zhejiang(浙江省人民政府). Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) or Shanghai Ranking ranked the college as 12th under the Chinese Language Universities category;[2] Chinese university ranking (CUAA) (Chinese Universities Alumni Association, Chinese: 中国校友会网) ranked it 7th under the same category.[3]

As of 2023, CUZ has two campuses in Zhejiang Province: one located in the Higher Education Zone, Xiasha, Hangzhou Economic & Technological Development Zone, covering a total area of 52 hectares with a floor space of 450,000 square meters; another one in Tongxiang covering over 33 hectares with a floor space of 160,000 square meters.[4]

History

In 1978, the Zhejiang Radio & TV School was founded. The school was set up to meet the need of high quality broadcast professionals. In 1982, the school was moved from Wanshi Village to East Zhoushan Road of Hangzhou City. During the decade from 1984 to 1994, the school cultivated groups of high quality broadcasters for the radio and TV industry of Zhejiang province.

In 1994, with the approval of the then China State Department of Radio, Film & Television, the school was officially upgraded to a higher specialized institute and its name changed to Zhejiang Radio & TV Higher Specialised School.

The college was established in 2000 by the merger of the Zhejiang Radio and Television School (浙江广播电视学校) and the Zhejiang Radio and Television Senior Vocational School (浙江广播电视高等专科学校).[5] By 2000, the school was under the co-administration and management of the National Radio and Television Administration and Zhejiang People's Government. This meant that both the central and provincial governments paid much attention to the development of the school, leading to a large expansion of the school in terms of the number of teaching staff, majors, and students.

A formal document from the Ministry of Education was issued in May 2004 to establish the Communication University of Zhejiang (CUZ, the former ZUMC).[6]
