The Federal University of Technology Akure (informally FUT Akure or simply FUTA) is a federal government-owned university located in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. It was founded in 1981[1] driven by the federal government of Nigeria to create universities that specialized in producing graduates with practical as well as theoretical knowledge of technologies.[2]
Other universities of technology established around the same time were the Federal University of Technology Owerri, the Federal University of Technology, Abeokuta (FUTAB), which later metamorphosed to the present University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), the Federal University of Technology Minna, the Federal University of Technology Yola, and the Federal University of Technology Bauchi (now Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University[3]).
Ranking
The Federal University of Technology Akure has been ranked the eighth-best university and best university of technology in Nigeria by webometrics as of January 2020.[4] In 2022, It was ranked as the 5th best university in Nigeria by World University Rankings.[5][6]

Library
Among the notable structures in the university is the central library, Albert Ilemobade Library, located just beside the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology. The library, which can accommodate many students, has volumes in almost every field of study, both inside and outside the university. Students are required to complete their library registration in their first year of admission to make sure it is available.[8]
The Library is named after Professor Albert Ilemobade, who was the second Vice-Chancellor of the university. It was established in 1982, out of the desires of the founding fathers and matriarch of the institution to cut a niche for research and sound teaching. It started in the Old Library Complex located at Oba Kekere (Mini campus), by April 2006, it moved to its permanent building which covers a floor space area of 1,614.74 m² and can sit 2,500 readers at a time. The building is a two-story building.[9]
It is open to all senior staff, students of the institution, as well as alumni of the university. The library also admits anyone else with cogent reasons with the provision of a letter of introduction from a recognized university official (i.e. dean of a faculty, head of department from the visitor's school or director of an organization).[10][11]
Student life
The university operates a radio station, FUTA Radio[12][13](93.1 MHz), on the campus.

The Federal University of Akure Radio Station programs include a morning news bulletin, a talk show on education, a music program, a special segment highlighting achievements and success stories of students, faculty, and alumni, and a talk on social issues.[12]
Campus facilities
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) is equipped with a range of campus facilities that cater to the academic, recreational, and daily needs of students, faculty, and staff. These facilities include libraries, lecture halls and classrooms, laboratories and research centers, computer centers, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Sports facilities include sports fields, courts, and gyms, student hostels, cafeterias and food courts, a health center, and auditoriums and event spaces.
Student organisation and clubs
The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) offers a wide range of student organizations and clubs that cater to diverse interests, hobbies, and academic pursuits. These include the Student Union Government (SUG), Professional and Academic Societies, Cultural and Arts Clubs, and Cultural and Drama Society. The SUG serves as a platform for students to express their concerns, advocate for their rights, and engage in decision-making processes. FUTA offers social and community service clubs, sports clubs, entrepreneurial and innovation clubs, hobby and special interest clubs, and student organizations and clubs to enrich the student experience, foster personal growth, and promote a sense of belonging within the university community. These clubs provide avenues for students to explore their interests, develop leadership abilities, and create lifelong connections with fellow students who share similar passions.[1][14]
Housing and residence
On-campus residence halls are located close to academic buildings, libraries, and other university facilities, with basic amenities such as study areas, common lounges, and laundry facilities. Room types range from single rooms to shared rooms with multiple occupants, and each residence hall is staffed with resident assistants and hall supervisors. FUTA’s residence halls organize activities and programs to promote community engagement and student development. Off-campus housing resources are provided to help students find suitable accommodations.[15]
Student services and support
FUTA offers a range of services and resources. These include academic advising, counseling and psychological services, health services, and career development and employment services. Academic advising helps students plan their academic trajectories, counseling, and psychological services support mental and emotional well-being, health services provide basic medical care, and career development and employment services prepare students for successful careers. FUTA provides career development services, financial aid and scholarships,[16] disability support services, student engagement and extracurricular activities, and academic, personal, and career-oriented resources to empower students to thrive academically, develop life skills, and navigate challenges.[17][18]
Student media
The FUTA Herald is the flagship student newspaper, FUTA Radio is a student-run radio station.[12]

Health and biomedical research team
FUTA’s health and biomedical research team focuses on research related to healthcare, biomedical sciences, and public health.
