Член Национальной академии наук США (1995)[1] и Американского философского общества (2021)[2]. Регент-профессор Университета штата Аризоны, где трудится с 2008 года.
Сын ботаника Билли Ли Тёрнера. В 1968 году окончил Техасский университет, через год там же - магистратуру. В 1974 году получил докторскую степень в Университете Висконсин-Мэдисон[3].
Научные интересы связаны с вопросами изменения ландшафтов, проектированием городских территорий, их уязвимости и сопротивляемости и устойчивостью[3].
Ассоциированный редактор PNAS[4].
