Incumbents

Events

  • January 30 (Keiō 2, 25th day of the 12th month) – Emperor Kōmei dies of smallpox. He had suffered a fatally violent bout of vomiting and diarrhea. Since he had consistently opposed the anti-bakufu forces this was distinctly convenient for them and it was rumored that he was assassinated, either by radicals from Choshu or radical officials in the court. However, there is no evidence of this and it is generally believed that he was simply one more victim of what was a worldwide pandemic at the time.[1]
  • February 3 (Keiō 2, 29th day of the 12th month) – Musuhito ascended to the throne as Emperor Meiji.[2]
  • November 10 (Keiō 3, 15th day of the 10th month) – An Imperial edict was issued sanctioning the restoration of Imperial government.
  • November 19 – Shōgun Tokugawa Yoshinobu resigns the shogunate.
