Английская Википедия:1959 Kamchatka earthquake
Шаблон:Short description Шаблон:Infobox earthquake
The 1959 Kamchatka earthquake occurred on May 4 at Шаблон:Tooltip with a moment magnitude of 8.0–8.3, and a surface wave magnitude of 8.25. The epicenter was near the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russian SFSR, USSR. Building damage was reported in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.[1]Шаблон:Sfn The maximum intensity was VIII (Damaging) on the Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik scale.[2] The intensity in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky was about VIII MSK.
The earthquake triggered a tsunami with Шаблон:Convert of runup that was recorded in Massacre Bay, Alaska, in the United States.[3] Subduction is active along about the southern half of the eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula, between its junctions with the Aleutian Islands and the Kuril Islands.Шаблон:Sfn
Tectonic setting
Kamchatka lies near a large convergent boundary—the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench—which accommodates the subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate (a microplate within the North American Plate).Шаблон:Sfn Subduction occurs at a rate of Шаблон:Convert/yr at the trench, increasing from north to south.Шаблон:Sfn This subduction zone generates Kamchatka earthquakes and their associated tsunamis. This subduction zone is associated with many large events throughout history, including earthquakes in 1737, 1841, 1923, and 1952. The 1737 earthquake was likely the strongest event on the peninsula, with magnitudes reaching Шаблон:M 9.3 and tsunami run-ups reportedly exceeding Шаблон:ConvertШаблон:Sfn The 1841 event is considered slightly weaker, with maximum magnitude estimates reaching Шаблон:M 9.0-9.2, and the tsunami run-up was Шаблон:Convert.[4]Шаблон:Sfn The 1923 earthquake was also quite strong, measuring Шаблон:M 8.5.Шаблон:Sfn The 1952 event was the most recent of the great earthquakes (Шаблон:M 8.5+) along the Kuril-Kamchatka trench, and measured Шаблон:M 9.0.Шаблон:Sfn The resulting tsunami from this earthquake generated runups up to Шаблон:Convert high.Шаблон:Sfn
Earthquake
The earthquake struck at 7:15 UTC, or 19:15 local time on May 4, 1959. The earthquake occurred at a depth of Шаблон:Convert,Шаблон:SfnШаблон:SfnШаблон:SfnШаблон:Sfn with a magnitude of 8.0–8.3.Шаблон:SfnШаблон:SfnШаблон:Sfn This event nucleated near where the 1952 earthquake ruptured with the most slip, and just south of the 1923 earthquake.Шаблон:Sfn The shock ruptured an area Шаблон:Convert wide, and Шаблон:Convert long.Шаблон:Sfn The maximum intensity on the Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik scale (MSK) was VIII (Damaging), and maximum felt intensities in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky were also MSK VIII.[2]
Tsunami
The tsunami was small, which was expected for the size of the earthquake. Run-ups of Шаблон:Convert were recorded, and at the Honolulu tide gauge, readings of Шаблон:Convert above the tide were also recorded.Шаблон:Sfn Readings of Шаблон:Convert run-ups in Hawaii were reported as well.Шаблон:Sfn In Massacre Bay, Alaska, run-ups of up to Шаблон:Convert were recorded.[3]
