The Red Sox finished second in the American League East with a record of 82 wins and 79 losses, Шаблон:Frac games behind the New York Yankees, who went on to win the AL championship. The Red Sox did not qualify for the postseason, as the AL wild card went to the Oakland Athletics, who had finished second in the American League West with a record of 102–60. The end of the regular season was pushed back from September 30th to October 7th due to the September 11 attacks.

- November 16, 2000: Chris Stynes was traded by the Cincinnati Reds to the Boston Red Sox for Michael Coleman and Donnie Sadler.[1]
- December 2000: Free agent Manny Ramirez signed an eight-year $160 million contract with the Red Sox.[2]
