Шаблон:Infobox Grand Prix race report
The 2003 United States Grand Prix (formally the XXXII SAP United States Grand Prix) was a Formula One motor race held on 28 September 2003 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Speedway, Indiana. It was the fifteenth and penultimate race of the 2003 Formula One World Championship and the fourth United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis. The 73-lap race was won by Michael Schumacher for the Ferrari team after starting from seventh position. Kimi Räikkönen, who started the Grand Prix from pole position, finished second in a McLaren car, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen third driving for Sauber, in what would be his last podium finish.
The victory was Schumacher's second consecutive win, following the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Background
The 2003 United States Grand Prix was the penultimate round of the 2003 Formula One World Championship, held on 28 September 2003, at the Шаблон:Convert Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) road course in Speedway, Indiana,[1][2] north of Indianapolis.[3] It was the fourth United States Grand Prix held at Indianapolis,[4] which had previously hosted the Indianapolis 500 as part of the Formula One World Championship from Шаблон:F1 to Шаблон:F1,[3] since the race was returned to the calendar in 2000 following a nine-year absence.[4] The Porsche Supercup held support races during the weekend.[5]
After winning the Шаблон:F1GP two weeks earlier,[6][7] Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher led the World Drivers' Championship with 82 points, three points ahead of Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya in second and a further four in front of McLaren's Kimi Räikkönen in third. Montoya's teammate Ralf Schumacher was fourth with 58 points and Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello was fifth with 55 points.[8] With two rounds of the season remaining and ten points on offer for winning the Grand Prix.,[7] Michael Schumacher could claim his record-breaking sixth world title if he won, Räikkönen was third and Montoya sixth. Even if Montoya won the season-ending Шаблон:F1GP, Schumacher would be the champion if he scored no more points, having won more races than Montoya.[9] Williams led the World Constructors' Championship with 141 points, four more than Ferrari in second. McLaren were third with 120 points. Renault were fourth with 79 points, with British American Racing (BAR) fifth with 18 points.[8]
Following the Italian Grand Prix on 14 September,[10] all teams tested at various European racing circuits to prepare for the United States Grand Prix.[11] McLaren, Renault and Toyota all did two days of testing at the Circuit de Barcelona in Spain,[12][13] while Williams and Jordan tested variously over three days at the Silverstone Circuit in England.[11][14] In the four-day test at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain, Ferrari did three days, joined by Sauber on the first two days, BAR on the final two days and Toyota on all four days.[15][16][17] Minardi conducted a comparison test between its PS03 vehicle and the outdated Arrows A23 car at the Mugello Circuit in Italy.[18] Toyota's Olivier Panis did a day's testing aerodynamic developments on the TF103 car at the Circuit Paul Ricard in France.[19] Ferrari further shookdown the electronic components of its F2003-GA car and its setup at the Monza Circuit and its private Fiorano Circuit in Italy.[11][20][21]
Michael Schumacher was the bookmakers' favourite to win the race.[22] He said his team were prepared for the event and were motivated more after winning in Italy, adding: "Every tiny error has its consequences. Whoever is able to exploit the resources during the weekend will come out on top."[7] Montoya was confident his car would perform well at Indianapolis since its engine was suited to the circuit's main straight and anticipated a close duel with his championship rivals.[7] He told reporters he did not need to win the Grand Prix but to finish ahead of Michael Schumacher and Räikkönen to become World Champion in Japan.[23] Räikkönen noted he had not yet finished a race at Indianapolis but said McLaren needed to attempt to be faster than Michael Schumacher and Montoya.[6] He added the MP4-17D's characteristics would be better suited at Indianapolis than at Monza and he required a decent finish in the late stage of the season to remain in contention for the championship title.[24]
Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA; Formula One's governing body) president Max Mosley warned Ferrari, Williams and McLaren and their drivers that any evidence of team orders applied during the Grand Prix following their banning in October 2002 because of Barrichello being ordered to let his teammate Michael Schumacher win the Шаблон:F1GP would be referred to the race stewards.[25][26] Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn stated he felt it right for a driver not in championship contention to not impede another duelling for the title.[25] Williams technical director Patrick Head said the team would let his drivers decide to let each other past and not the squad.[26] McLaren owner Ron Dennis said he did not foresee team orders becoming a problem in the season's final two races and he expected teammates to aid each other in the championship duel.[26]
Most teams did not introduce significant upgrades to their cars to the Grand Prix as they were focused on the Шаблон:F1 season. The three championship-contending teams in Ferrari, Williams and McLaren were the expectations. BMW and Ferrari brought improved versions of their engines as well as various aerodynamic car appendage amendments.[27] McLaren also introduced minor aerodynamic alterations and BAR were the only non-front running team to bring an important innovation. BAR's engine supplier Honda debuted an enhanced power unit and a new gearbox.[27]
There were ten constructors that entered two race drivers each for the event.[28] Allan McNish (Renault), Björn Wirdheim (Jordan) and Gianmaria Bruni (Minardi) were the three drivers who drove a third car in only the Friday private test session.[29][30] Ralph Firman returned to Jordan after Zsolt Baumgartner replaced him for the preceding two rounds because Firman sustained an inner ear imbalance in an accident during practice for the Шаблон:F1GP two races earlier.[31][32] BAR's Jenson Button was confirmed fit to race following a high-speed crash he sustained during testing at Jerez that required him to undergo a check-up at a London hospital.[33] Ralf Schumacher returned to Williams after missing the Italian race because he reported suffering a headache after a crash in a test session at Monza and was replaced by test driver Marc Gené.[34][35]
Private test session
A two-hour test session was held on Friday morning for teams who opted for limited testing during the season.[36] The session took place in dry, cool weather,[37] although there was the hint of a drizzle in the second hour but it was not heavy enough to affect proceedings.[38] Renault's Jarno Trulli was fastest with a lap time of 1:10.986, ahead of his teammate Fernando Alonso by only one-thousand of a second. McNish was third-fastest, with Jaguar's Mark Webber fourth and his teammate Justin Wilson fifth.[29] Some drivers went off the circuit during testing.[39] Nineteen minutes into the session, a rubber seal came loose between two concrete slabs on the main straight and it had to be removed by marshals, causing a four-minute stoppage to allow marshals to remove the debris.[29][38][39]
Practice and warm-up sessions
There were three practice sessions preceding Sunday's race: one 60-minute session on Friday morning and two 45-minute sessions on Saturday morning.[40] Clouds were above the track when the opening session began and every participant wanted to get some running as soon as they could.[41] Steady rain fell and increased in intensity halfway through practice and the FIA allowed teams to install extreme wet-weather tyres to let teams to prepare for a potential wet-weather race.[39][41] Trulli lapped fastest at 1:11.153, 0.186 seconds quicker than Ralf Schumacher in second. Panis, Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Alonso, Webber, Montoya, Räikkönen and his teammate David Coulthard followed in the top ten.[42] The session was stopped after 22 minutes when Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella's engine failed on the exit of turn 12 and laid oil across the banked turn 13.[43] He stopped his car on the main straight with smoke billowing from his car,[39] necessitating the car's removal from the circuit to the pit lane and the cleaning of oil by marshals.[44][45] Fisichella's teammate Firman stopped at turn ten towards the session's conclusion.[39][43]
Heavy overnight rain meant that drivers drove on a circuit with damp patches in cool, overcast conditions in the second practice session.[46][47] The sun later shined on the circuit and it began drying.[48][49] Trulli continued to set the pace with a lap of 1:12.408, ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Montoya, Barrichello, Alonso, Toyota's Cristiano da Matta, Panis, Sauber's Heinz-Harald Frentzen and the Jaguar pair of Webber and Wilson.[47] A fuel pressure issue caused Michael Schumacher to stop his Ferrari on his installation lap at turn nine two minutes into the session and marshals removed the car from the track.[46][47][49] Air and track temperatures rose for the final practice session. Barrichello went fastest with a time of 1:11.112, twelve-hundredths of a second faster than second-placed Trulli. Michael Schumacher, Montoya, Coulthard, Räikkönen, Panis, Webber, Ralf Schumacher and Alonso were in positions three through ten.[50] Ralf Schumacher out braked himself going into turn eight, went through the wet grass and damaged his car's right-hand side against the tyre wall.[46][51][52] On-circuit activity was briefly affected with the waving of yellow flags.[53] Da Matta's engine failed as he went through turn 12,[53] dropping oil on the circuit at that corner and the pit lane entry.[46]
In partly cloudy conditions, Alonso was fastest in the fifteen-minute warm-up session that followed the final practice session with a lap time of 1:12.079,[46] followed by Montoya, Panis, Räikkönen, Barrichello, Da Matta, Coulthard, Ralf Schumacher and Webber.[54] Trulli damaged the front and right-hand of his Renault in two collisions with the turn eleven tyre wall.[46]
Qualifying
There were two one-hour qualifying sessions, one on both Friday and Saturday afternoons. The World Drivers' Championship standings set the first session's running order (first to last) with the second run in reverse of the first session times (slowest to fastest). Each competitor recorded one timed lap in each session with no other cars on track and the starting order was determined by the second session's quickest laps.[39][40] The circuit was completely dry and tyre rubber had been removed from it following the rain shower in the first practice session.[55] Rain fell on the circuit midway through the first qualifying session and increased in intensity, requiring drivers to be cautious and the FIA permitted the installation of extreme wet-weather tyres for the rest of qualifying.[39][56] Michelin-shod cars were more competitive in the session than the Bridgestone runners because their new front tyres performed better in cooler conditions.[57] Trulli, who was fastest in the infield section,[57] took provisional pole position with a lap time of 1:09.566 with Barrichello 0.269 seconds slower in second.[58] Webber was unaffected by the rain and pushed hard to claim third.[55] An understeer caused Ralf Schumacher to brake too late for the first turn and he was fourth. Montoya braked too early for some turns, losing some time and placing fifth. Coulthard, sixth, went sideways through turn 13 before starting his lap. Alonso was hampered by understeer that was better dealt with on a low fuel load and was seventh.[59][60] Michael Schumacher ran wide at the exit of turn one and took eighth position.[58] Räikkönen in ninth lost control of his car early in his lap and Button in tenth was the last driver to not be affected by the rain.[56][59][60] Da Matta was the faster Toyota in 11th, ahead of the best Jordan of Fisichella in 12th due to the circuit being slightly wet on the latter's lap.[60] Frentzen took 13th on dry tyres when much of the track became sodden halfway through his effort.[55][60] Panis, 14th, saw the rain increase in intensity during his lap.[59] Sauber's Nick Heidfeld and BAR's Jacques Villeneuve were both caught out by the change in conditions and were 15th and 16th, respectively. Firman's team installed extreme wet-weather tyres onto his car and came 17th.[60] Wilson was 18th ahead of Minardi's Nicolas Kiesa in 19th in his first time driving a Formula One car in wet conditions.[59] Kiesa's teammate Jos Verstappen was the only driver not to set a lap time because of a traction control system interface issue between the electronic control unit and the engine. Minardi called Verstappen into the pit lane to abandon his qualifying lap.[58][60]
The second qualifying session took place in dry, warm and partially cloudy weather conditions.[46][61] Räikkönen was the 12th driver to set his lap time,[62] and he secured the second pole position of his career with a lap of 1:11.670.[46] He was joined on the grid's front row by Barrichello in second who was 0.124 seconds slower.[62][63] Panis had a clean effort and achieved Toyota's best qualifying result at that point in third.[64] Montoya oversteered throughout much of the lap and the consequence tyre fading lost him three-tenths of a second and left him in fourth.[65] Excess oversteer meant Montoya's teammate Ralf Schumacher was fifth and the latter lost control of his car at turn one after completing his lap.[62] Alonso in sixth dealt with handling problems that saw him oversteer and understeer in the track's turns. Michael Schumacher's car lacked grip and it had handling difficulties en route to seventh position. A minor oversteer in turn four and understeer in turn eight left Coulthard eighth.[65] Da Matta drove the spare Toyota setup for him following his engine overheating in the warm-up session and he struck the kerbs to gain speed and was ninth. Trulli made minor errors on his lap that left him 10th.[62][65] The BAR pair of Button and Villeneuve qualified 11th and 12th, respectively, with the team changing their setups to improve the driveability of their cars and grip. Heidfeld was 13th when his tyres began graining at the end of his lap.[65] Webber's Jaguar lacked grip and balance and he understeered en route to 14th.[61] Frentzen, 15th, ran wide in turn six and lost time.[62] The track conditions had changed so much for Wilson that his car developed understeer and he qualified 16th. Jordan teammates Fisichella and Firman were 17th and 18th respectively due to a lack of grip in their vehicles that were setup for wet-weather driving.[65] The Minardi duo of Verstappen (19th) and Kiesa (20th) completed the starting order, having both cars run on a heavy fuel load that created severe oversteer and the rear be difficult to handle.[61][65]
Qualifying classification
Race
Michael Schumacher won the race by 18.258 seconds from pole-sitter Räikkönen, taking a huge step toward his record-breaking sixth Drivers' Championship as a result. Afterwards, Räikkönen remained in mathematical contention for the championship with one race to go, but Montoya dropped out of the hunt after being penalized for an incident on Lap 3 with Schumacher's Ferrari teammate Barrichello.
It was the German's first double win since the Ferrari team and its tire supplier Bridgestone accused rival tire maker Michelin of using illegal tires for most of the season, at the Hungarian Grand Prix, threatening to decide the title in court. As a result, Michelin were forced to retool their tires before the Italian Grand Prix, with its teams suffering in the changing weather conditions at Indianapolis.
Though rain clouds surrounded the circuit at the start, all drivers began the race on dry tires. The cars on the "clean" side of the track got off the grid much better, with Räikkönen taking the lead ahead of Panis and the two Schumachers (all from the left side of the grid) (with drivers including Barrichello, Alonso, Coulthard and Montoya dropping back on the right) and managing to open up a lead of 1.6 seconds over Panis's Toyota and Ralf Schumacher's Williams. On Lap 2, light rain began to fall on parts of the circuit as Räikkönen increased his lead to 2.4 seconds and Panis came under attack from the Williams. Michael Schumacher was up to fourth from seventh on the grid, and Coulthard took fifth place from Barrichello, who was struggling with a malfunctioning gearbox.
Entering Turn 1 on Lap 3 Ralf Schumacher overtook Panis for second place, with Montoya pulling alongside Barrichello on the outside of the 90-degree right-hander to challenge for sixth. As they entered the left-handed Turn 2, Montoya was squeezed onto the curb and then the grass by the Ferrari, and as they began to exit the turn the right front wheel of the Williams touched the Ferrari's sidepod - forcing Barrichello onto the gravel. The Renaults of Alonso and Trulli both got around Montoya as he avoided the spinning Barrichello, managing to continue in eighth place with no apparent damage - even setting the fastest time on Lap 8, and by Lap 15 moving up to third on a drying track.
Barrichello later said, "We were running side by side. I thought I had left him enough space, but he touched me and I spun." While Barrichello's car was being removed from the runoff area under a local yellow flag in Turns 1 and 2, Schumacher overtook Panis at the entry to Turn 1 on Lap 5, claiming that he completed the pass before the turn. The stewards agreed, and he was not penalized.
Several drivers tried to anticipate a heavier rainfall by stopping for wet tires very early in the first light shower. Panis, Da Matta, Villeneuve and Kiesa all stopped on Lap 6 or 7, only to find the track beginning to dry already by Lap 8. Beginning with Villeneuve on Lap 9, they all stopped again within a few laps to change back to dry tires.
However the rain returned during the first round of scheduled pit stops, and when the championship contenders pitted – Montoya on Lap 17, Räikkönen on Lap 19 and Schumacher on Lap 20 – they all chose to stay with dry tires. On Lap 19, as the rain began to fall more heavily, Montoya was given a drive-through penalty for "causing an avoidable accident" with Barrichello. Montoya rejoined the track during the downpour still on dry tires in eleventh place, effectively ending his championship challenge. "A very disappointing race," he commented afterwards, "basically decided by the penalty I was given for the accident with Rubens and the moment I had to pay it. It is sad to lose my Drivers' Championship chances in this way."
On Lap 28, Button led Frentzen by 5.8 seconds as Schumacher overtook Räikkönen (the top Michelin runner, having already passed Wilson) for third place, then taking second five laps later from Heinz-Harald Frentzen. On Lap 38, having cut 1.5 seconds per lap from Button's lead, Schumacher reclaimed first while the other two Championship contenders, Räikkönen and Montoya, lay fourth and tenth despite the track beginning to dry out once more.
The BAR team's hopes for a podium finish by Button ended on Lap 42 when the Briton's engine failed on the main straight, restoring Frentzen to second place. The Sauber driver himself was overtaken by Räikkönen on Lap 55, before eventually finishing in third (Frentzen's second podium in four years at Indianapolis, and his final Formula One podium). Combined with teammate Heidfeld's fifth place, the Sauber team earned ten points to move past BAR and Jaguar into fifth in the constructor's standings. Trulli finished fourth for Renault, ahead of Heidfeld, Montoya, Fisichella and Wilson. Schumacher's win also put Ferrari back in front of Williams in the constructor's, with 147 points compared to Williams's 144.
Post-race
The changing conditions saw the Michelin advantage in the dry superseded by Bridgestone dominance in the wet. Michelin motorsport director Pierre Dupasquier said: "Today's race was absolutely fascinating from a technical perspective. We set the early pace, and our drivers were the quickest out there when the circuit dried towards the end. In slightly damp conditions, our grooved dry weather tyres enabled our leading drivers to run up to three seconds per lap faster than Michael Schumacher. In wetter conditions, we were losing two seconds per lap."
According to Räikkönen, who ran with Michelins, "The weather basically lost us the race victory today as we were not as quick in the wet conditions as Michael. I made a good start from pole and was pretty much in control. Once the rain started things changed. We came in at the right times and didn't put a foot wrong but there was nothing we could do."
