Incumbent Democratic governor John Baldacci won re-election to a second term, defeating Republican nominee Chandler Woodcock. This was the last time Maine would elect a Democratic governor until Janet Mills won the 2018 gubernatorial election.
In the general election, Baldacci, Woodcock, Green Independent Party candidate Pat LaMarche, and independents Barbara Merrill and Phillip Morris Napier appeared on the ballot.
