The 2023 Pakistan blackout was a power outage that occurred across Pakistan on 23 January 2023.[1] This was the second major grid breakdown in Pakistan in 2 years.[2] In majority of the regions, the blackout lasted more than 12 hours while in some areas it lasted even longer than 12 hours.[3]

Cause

The Energy Ministry issued a statement on Twitter that the system frequency of the national grid went down at 7:34am (02:34 GMT) on Monday morning.[4]

Areas affected

The Power minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said that voltage fluctuation occurred between the cities of Jamshoro and Dadu due to which the entire country lost power.[5] Areas affected by power cuts include the major cities like Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Quetta, as well as dozens of small cities and towns.[6]

Impact

The blackout hit Internet and mobile phone services. Several companies and hospitals said they had switched to back-up generators, but disruptions continued. The blackout also resulted in $70m in losses for its textile industry.[7] People in different cities also complained water shortages as water pumps, which run on electricity, were not working. Many ATMs also stopped working and people were unable to withdraw money due to no backup power.[8]
