Elections will be held for 23 out of 59 seats in the Illinois Senate.[1]

Two Republicans will not seek re-election.

District 1
Democrat Javier Cervantes was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4] He was appointed to the Senate on November 18, 2022, to serve during veto session of the 102nd General Assembly.[5]
District 4
Democrat Kimberly Lightford was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4]
District 5
Democrat Lakesia Collins was appointed to the Illinois Senate on August 15, 2023. There will be an election for the remaining two years of the term.[6]
District 7
The 7th district includes various neighborhoods on the north side of Chicago.[7] Democrat Mike Simmons was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4]
District 10
The 10th district includes various neighborhoods on the northwest side of Chicago and surrounding suburbs.[7] Democrat Rob Martwick was reelected to the Illinois Senate against nominal, write-in opposition in the 2022 general election.[4] He is seeking reelection.
District 13
The 13th district stretches from downtown Chicago to the City's south side.[7] Democrat Robert Peters was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4]
District 16
Democrat Willie Preston was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4]
District 19
Democrat Michael Hastings was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 50.59% of the vote.[4]
District 20
Democrat Natalie Toro was appointed to the Illinois Senate on July 10, 2023, after Cristina Pacione-Zayas resigned to join the Johnson administration.[8] Graciela Guzman is challenging Toro for the Democratic nomination.[9] As the vacancy was filled with greater than 28 months remaining in the term, state statute requires an election be held.[10]
District 22
Democrat Christina Castro was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4]
District 25
Democrat Karina Villa was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.72% of the vote.[4]
District 28
Democrat Laura Murphy was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.72% of the vote.[4]
District 31
Democrat Mary Edly-Allen was elected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.72% of the vote.[4]
District 34
Democrat Steve Stadelman was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.59% of the vote.[4]
District 37
The 37th district includes all or parts of Lee, Bureau, Henry, DeKalb, Ogle, Rock Island, Whiteside, Stark, Peoria, Woodford and Marshall counties.[7] Republican Win Stoller was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4] Stoller is not running for reelection.[2] On the Republican side, Chirs Bishop, a member of the Dixon City Council,[11] former Mayor of Dixon Li Arellano, Jr,[12] and Henry County Board member Tim Yager.[13]
Former state legislator Tom Demmer has declined to be a candidate.[14]
District 40
The 40th district includes the parts of the Chicago Southland in Cook and Will counties and parts of Kankakee County.[7] Democrat Patrick Joyce was reelected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 55.34% of the vote.[4] Philip Nagel, the 2022 Republican nominee for this seat, has announced his candidacy.[15]
District 43
Democrat Rachel Ventura was elected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 56.05% of the vote.[4]
District 46
The 46th district is located in Central Illinois and includes portions of Peoria and Bloomington-Normal.[7] Democrat Dave Koehler was elected to the Illinois Senate in the 2022 general election with 58.07% of the vote.[4]
District 49
Democrat Meg Loughran Cappel was elected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4]
District 52
The 52nd district, located in east-central Illinois, includes Champaign, Danville, Rantoul, St. Joseph, and Urbana.[7]
After successfully seeking reelection to the 103rd General Assembly, Scott M. Bennett died prior to inauguration. Then-Champaign Township Assessor Paul Faraci was appointed to the Illinois Senate and sworn into office on January 11, 2023.[16] Faraci is running for election. State Representative Carol Ammons, after seeking appointment to the seat following Bennett's death and exploring a primary run for the Democratic nomination against Faraci, opted instead to run for reelection to the Illinois House of Representatives.[17]
District 53
The 53rd district includes all or portions of Bureau, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, LaSalle, Marshall, McLean, Peoria, Putnam, Tazewell, Will, and Woodford counties in central Illinois.[7] Republican Jason Barickman was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4] Barickman declined to take office for the 103rd General Assembly. Republican Tom Bennett was appointed to the Illinois Senate to fill the subsequent vacancy.[18] As the vacancy was filled with greater than 28 months remaining in the term, state statute requires an election be held.[10] Bennett is not seeking reelection.[19]
Chris Balkema, Chair of the Grundy County Board, Susan Wynn Bence, Bennett's chief of staff, Mike Kirkton, a member of the Livingston County Board, and Jesse Faber are candidates for the Republican nomination.[19][20] Gary Manier, the Mayor of Washington, and several others announced their respective candidacies, but did not file petitions by the deadline to run in the Republican primary.[20][21] Kirkton's petitions have been challenged for insufficient signatures.[22]
District 55
The 55th district, located in downstate Illinois, includes all or parts of Richland, Clay, Fayette, Marion, Clinton, Madison, and St. Clair counties.[7] Republican Jason Plummer was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4]
District 58
Republican Terri Bryant was reelected to the Illinois Senate unopposed in the 2022 general election.[4] Bryant is running for reelection. Wesley Kash, a former Assistant State’s Attorney in Jefferson County, is challenging Bryant in the primary.[23]
