The 2024 New York's 3rd congressional district special election is a special election to the United States House of Representatives that will be held on February 13, 2024, to fill the vacant seat in New York's 3rd congressional district for the remainder of the 118th United States Congress, after the December 1, 2023, expulsion of Republican George Santos.

Background

Шаблон:Expand section A special election for New York’s 3rd congressional district was required after George Santos was expelled from the House of Representatives by a vote of 311–114. Santos was the first representative to be expelled in two decades and the first since the Civil War to not be convicted of a crime first.[1] At the time of the expulsion, Santos was indicted on 23 federal charges.[2] The election is expected to be competitive and expensive for both parties.[3][4]

In New York, there is no primary election to fill a vacancy. Instead, county party officials in Nassau and Queens will choose their party's nominee.[5] On December 7, 2023, Democratic party officials selected Tom Suozzi, who previously served as representative for the district, to be the party's nominee.[6] The following week, Republicans picked Nassau County Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip as their nominee.[7]

Nominees

Republican Party

On December 14, the Nassau GOP selected Nassau County Legislator Mazi Melesa Pilip as the Republican nominee to replace Santos.[7] Pilip, who previously served in the Israeli Defense Forces, has represented the 10th legislative district in the Nassau County Legislature since 2022.[8] She is a registered Democrat, though she holds office as a Republican.[9]

Democratic Party

Tom Suozzi, who represented this district in the House from 2017 to 2023, was chosen as the Democratic candidate for the special election. Suozzi previously served as Nassau County Executive and as Mayor of Glen Cove, and ran for Governor in 2006 and 2022.[10]

Minor parties

New York allows fusion voting in elections, prompting minor parties to nominate candidates on their ballot lines. The Conservative Party of New York State nominated Pilip.[11] Suozzi declined to seek the support of the Working Families Party, despite having accepted the party's nomination in past election cycles.[12][13]
