The first round of the last presidential election was held on 16 March 2019, so the next election is expected to be held on 17 March 2024.Шаблон:Ref It may, however, be held earlier under exceptional circumstances such as the resignation or death of the President.
Incumbent president Zuzana Čaputová announced in June 2023 that she would not run for a second term.[1]
Electoral system
The President of Slovakia is elected using the two-round system; if no candidate gains a majority in the first round, a runoff will be held between the top-two candidates.[2]
Candidates
Announced
- Ján Drgonec, former justice of the Supreme Court, former MP for ANO. Announced candidacy in March 2023.[3]
- Krisztián Forró, chairman of the Hungarian Alliance political party. Announced candidacy on 9 December 2023 intending to start collecting 15-thousand signatures required for candidacy in near-coming days.[4]
- Štefan Harabin, former judge, former chief justice of the Supreme Court, former Minister of Justice and 2019 presidential candidate for Vlasť party. He claimed his intention to run in the election upon his arrest for "approval of Russia's attack on Ukraine" in May 2022,[5] and confirmed his intention in February 2023.[6]
- Beáta Janočková, civil and parental rights activist. Announced candidacy as an independent candidate on 13 November 2023, initiating the collection of 15-thousand signatures to support her candidacy.[7]
- Ivan Korčok, diplomat and former Foreign Minister. After president Zuzana Čaputová announced the decision to not run for re-election, Korčok announced his considerations to run for the election. He finally announced his candidacy on 30 August 2023.[8][9]
- Ján Kubiš, diplomat and former Foreign Minister admitted interest on 28 June 2023.[10] On 19 August, Kubiš announced candidacy and collection of 15,000 required signatures as an independent candidate.[11]
Speculative
- Martin Jakubec, businessman, singer, television personality. He announced his presidential candidacy in the 2019 election, but failed to meet the minimal age requirement.[12] He ran in the 2022 Slovak local elections as a candidate of ĽSNS for the Mayor of Bratislava, receiving 1.39%.[13] In March 2020, he announced on his Facebook profile that he will run for the 2024 presidential election, but it remains unclear whether he has started collecting the 15,000 citizen or 15 MP signatures.[14]
- Igor Matovič, Chairman of the SLOVAKIA political movement, former Prime Minister and Minister of Finance. His candidacy was speculated by politologist and researcher Václav Hřích. Matovič did not announce the intention to run yet.[15]
- Robert Mistrík, researcher, entrepreneur and co-founder of SaS. He ran in the previous presidential election, but later withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Zuzana Čaputová.[16]
- Vladimír Palko, mathematician, university professor, former Minister of the Interior, political commentator. Confirmed rumours of candidacy in an interview on 17 August 2023, failed to confirm the intention.[17]
- Peter Pellegrini, Speaker of the National Council, Chairman of HLAS-SD and former Prime Minister is specualted as potential candidate of his party.[18] Pellegrini informed that he will announce the decision of candidacy in January 2024.[19]
- Maroš Žilinka, incumbent Prosecutor General of Slovakia. Although he denies the claims that he will run in the election,[20] some journalists, politologists and politicians, including the Minister of Defence Jaroslav Naď, still speculate about Žilinka's candidacy.[21][22]
Declined
- Zuzana Čaputová, incumbent President. Initially has not ruled out her candidacy for re-election.[23] She announced on 20 June 2023 that she won't run.[24]
- Erika Jurinová, vice-chairman of SLOVAKIA movement, incumbent Governor of Žilina Region and a former MP. Put forward as a speculative candidate by Igor Matovič in November 2023. Jurinová declined candidacy.[25]
- Viliam Karas, lawyer and former Minister of Justice, member and expert of KDH. It was speculated that a KDH candidate may be a result of internal primaries against MEP Miriam Lexmann. In November 2023, Karas declined to comment on his candidacy but declined the speculations in December 2023 during a Rádio Slovensko interview with Anna Vargová.[26][27]
- Milan Krajniak, vice-chairman of Sme Rodina political movement, former Minister of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, and a former MP. Krajniak declined the speculative candidacy in November 2023.[28] In 2019, Krajniak ran unsucessfully receiving 2.77% of votes in first round of presidential elections.
- Miriam Lexmann, MEP for Christian Democratic Movement. Speculated as a potential candidate of KDH. Lexmann, wife of Movement's chairman Milan Majerský, declared that she is considering the candidacy in November 2023. Her candidacy would also be a result of informal primaries within KDH, due to speculatitve candidacy of former Viliam Karas.[29] Karas refused candidacy on 12 December 2023.[30] Days earlier, Lexmann hinted a preference for continued post of an MEP over presidency.[31] Lexmann eventually declined candidacy on 19 December 2023.[32]
- František Mikloško, incumbent non-partisan MP in KDH caucus, former Speaker of the National Council, former anti-Communist dissident.[33] Mikloško ran for president unsuccessfully thrice, peaking with a 2004 result of 6.52% in the first round, with a most recent result of 5.73% in 2019.
- Peter Weiss, diplomat, former chairman of the SDĽ and former ambassador to the Czech Republic and Hungary. He was rumoured to be the candidate of HLAS–SD.[34] Weiss declined the candidacy in late August 2023.[35]
- Robert Fico, incumbent leader and MP of SMER–SD, current Prime Minister and 2014 presidential candidate. He ruled out his candidancy on 17 December 2023.[36]
- Štefan Hamran, former President of the Police Force. Hamran announced that he considers candidacy in mid-December 2023, subject to avaiability of campaign staff, funding and collection of 15-thousand citizen petition.[37] On 21 December 2023 Hamran ruled out his candidacy.[38]
