Background

The Cities and Local Government Devolution Act 2016 introduced directly elected mayors for collections of local authorities in England. A devolution deal to create the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority encompassing the unitary authority areas of the City of York and North Yorkshire was signed on 1 August 2022, coinciding with the celebration of Yorkshire Day.[1]

Electoral system

The election will use first-past-the-post to elect the mayor in accordance with the Elections Act 2022. All registered electors living in York and North Yorkshire aged 18 or over on 2 May 2024 will be entitled to vote in the mayoral election.

Candidates

Conservative Party

North Yorkshire councillor and former leader of the Conservative group on Ryedale District Council Keane Duncan, from Malton, was selected as the Conservative Party's candidate for the election in July 2023.[2]

Green Party

Former soldier and North Yorkshire councillor Kevin Foster has been selected as the Green Party candidate for the election. He currently represents the Hipswell and Colburn division in Catterick Garrison on North Yorkshire Council.[3]

Independent

Former detective Keith Tordoff of Pateley Bridge announced his intention to run for the mayoralty in June 2023. He was initially selected as the Yorkshire Party candidate,[4] but he resigned from the party less than a fortnight after the selection was announced, to stand as an independent candidate instead. Tordoff previously came third in the 2021 North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner election as well as its subsequent by-election.[5]

In December 2023 Joshua Vale - an independent councillor for Malton & Norton - announced his intention to stand as an independent candidate to be Mayor of York & North Yorkshire.
