The 29th Critics' Choice Awards will be presented on January 14, 2024, at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport in Santa Monica, California, honoring the finest achievements of filmmaking and television programming in 2023.[1][2] The ceremony will be broadcast on The CW and hosted by Chelsea Handler, marking her second consecutive year hosting the ceremony; "I am very happy and excited to be hosting the Critics Choice Awards again this year, as last year was one of the most fun nights I've had. There is no greater reward than making fun of actors and then getting drunk with them afterward. It's an honor," Handler said in a statement.[3]
Like in the previous three years, film and television nominations were announced separately.[4] The television nominations were announced on December 5, 2023.[5] The film nominations were announced on December 13, 2023.[6]
The original venue was to take place at the recently renovated Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel, the Critics' Choice Awards home base which the Critics Choice Association (CCA) helped re-open in 2022, but was later moved back to Santa Monica's Barker Hangar. This change was to avoid risk for the nominees, presenters, and attendees to cross a picket line at the hotel; the Fairmont is one of more than 50 hotels in Southern California that are currently involved in a labor dispute with Unite Here Local 11. "We regret that a labor dispute has made it impossible for the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards show to be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza, where it has enjoyed great success for the past two years," said Joey Berlin, CCA CEO. "But we are happy to be able to return to the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, where our show has also enjoyed great success through the years."[2]
Barbie led the film nominations with a record-breaking eighteen, followed by Oppenheimer and Poor Things with thirteen each.[6] The Morning Show led the television nominations with six, followed by Succession with five.[5] Additionally, the cultural phenomenon and box-office success of "Barbenheimer" received a total of thirty-one nominations.[6] Overall, Warner Bros. received a total of 25 nominations for film, the most for any studio this year; Netflix received a total of 21 nominations for television, the most for any network (for the seventh year in a row).
