A.O. Nea Ionia F.C, officially known as Nea Ionia (Шаблон:Lang-el, Athlitikos Omilos Neas Ionias), the "Athletic Union of New Ionia", is a Greek association football club based in the city of Nea Ionia, Greece.[1] The club currently compete in the Athens First Division.
History
At the end of the first decade of the previous century, the town of Nea Ionia had a lot of football clubs, each with its separate football history.[2][3] The town was known to the rest of Athens for its sport-active inhabitants. A.O. Nea Ionia is a merged product of historic football clubs, last accomplished in 2001, and it's today's most representative club of this refugee town.[4] The basic colours of the team are yellow and blue. The football club was relegated from the Greek Football League 2 in the 2014–2015 season, as they finished 13th in Group 4 rankings. A change of ownership and severe financial problems led the club to the local championships in the new 2015–2016 football season.
In 2018, the club appealed to the Hellenic Football Federation for the training compensation (€29.500) of Marios Ogboe's transfer from OFI Crete to Hamilton Academical and won the case.[5][6]
Stadium
The club's home ground is located in Nea Ionia, Athens. The municipal stadium of Nea Ionia[7] is the home ground for A.O.Nea Ionia from the day of its foundation. It was built in 1962. In 2004, the whole stadium was extensively renovated, and the pitch was replaced with a turf system of the very last generation. The dressing rooms were renovated in 2007. The new facilities and stands that were built in 2015 were fully sponsored by the government of Greece. The stadium is also the home ground for A.E. Eleftheroupoli and P.A.O. Alsoupolis. The main entrance of the stadium is situated at Olympias Street.[8]
Part of the dramatic film "The Striker with Number 9", directed by Pantelis Voulgaris, was filmed in this stadium.[9]
