Adidas Ultraboost is a line of shoes produced by Adidas, with the first model released in 2015. Ultraboost shoes are best known for using Adidas' Boost foam in the soles of their shoes. While the not first shoe to incorporate it, it is the most popular line to use it and has gone on to release different models.
Overview
The first shoe in the Ultraboost line was released as a performance running shoe. Adidas had not been able to gain traction or popularity with its new boost material in its shoes and wanted to release a product that would make the technology popular. The shoe would see a release in February 2015 but did not get much excitement upon its debut.[1] The shoe would become popularity a couple of months later when Kanye West wore a pair of all-white Ultraboost in May 2015 during his performance at the Billboard Music Awards. The appearance immediately caused the exact model to sell out and immediately moved the shoe from an athletic product to a fashion product.[2]
Adidas Ultraboost 1.0
Released in 2015 as simply the Adidas Ultraboost, the Adidas Ultraboost 1.0 was the first shoe ever to use the Boost technology from Adidas. It had a knitted upper called Primeknit on top of the Boost sole and plastic cases on the sides to represent the three stripe logo and house the shoe laces.[3] The design of the shoe was purposely created with a simple design and single colors in order to give it a clean aesthetic and emphasize the innovation of the Boost technology.
Adidas Ultraboost ST
Released in late 2015, this version of the original Ultraboost offered as Adidas put it, Engineered Stability break in the sole of the shoe to provide better stability. It also debuted with a slimmer cage and vibrant color options instead of the single colors the original had.[4]
Adidas Ultraboost Uncaged
Adidas noticed many customers of the Ultraboost shoes cutting off the cage around the side of the shoes in order to have a more simplistic look and decided to release an official version of the Ultraboost which removed the cages. This version was first released in June 2016.[5]
Adidas Ultraboost 2.0
Despite the name, the shoes have all the same features as the previous model but with the available options of more colors options. This shoe was released to meet the demands of the original model being sold out from retailers.[6]
Adidas Ultraboost X
In 2017, Adidas released an exclusive model of the Ultraboost specifically for women. The shoe features the same design as the previous shoes but has the cage go around the sides of the shoe and connect at the top with the three stripe logo being displayed on the knitted upper.[7]
Adidas Ultraboost Laceless
Another more simplified version of the Uncaged model with the laces being completely removed. These pair are notable for not including the three stripe logo on the side of the shoes.[8]
