He wrote biographies of Gladys Aylward,[1] and Flora Sandes,[2] and co-wrote Ingrid Bergman's autobiography.[3] Bergman played Gladys Aylward in the film The Inn of the Sixth Happiness based on Burgess's biography.

Having served in the Royal Air Force during World War II,[4] Burgess went on to write The Longest Tunnel: The True Story of World War II's Great Escape,[5] the story of "The Great Escape".
