The Convent of Our Lady of Belén of Havana is situated in the Old Havana section of the city between the Calle Compostela façade and Calles Acosta and Picota. The complex is dominated by the convent, church, and the Arco de Belén the only such passageway in Havana. This arch, constructed in 1775 by Pedro Medina, is situated at the far end of the façade, on the corner of Acosta and Compostela. [1]
Construction
The construction of this institution is due to two prominent figures of the 18th century in Havana: Bishop Diego Evelino Hurtado de Compostela and Don Juan Francisco Carballo, Alférez de Militia and one of the most important merchants of Havana. His Financial contributions contributed decisively to the financing and execution of the Convent of Our Lady of Belén of Havana. It was initially intended as a shelter for poor convalescents. The construction of the building began in 1712, its costs being borne by Juan Francisco de Carballo, who purchased the land that the Convent occupies today. Carballo could not see the work completed, as he was murdered in 1718. Since early times the Convent has been occupied by Belemite friars, a religious order created in 1656 in Guatemala.[1]
Pedro Medina
Inside the complex, the convent, the church, and the Arco de Belén can be seen, the only one of its kind in Havana. The arch was built by Pedro Medina in 1775 and is located at the end of the long façade on Calle Compostela and on Calle Acosta. The arch supports the level that communicates with other portions of the religious complex in the neighboring block and forms a short tunnel that characterizes the location. The facade design of the convent is austere. The main facade, towards Calle Compostela, is composed two-levels to which the Jesuits added an upper floor with flanking pavilions. In the center, the access door is the only visual element of interest. [1]
