Bai Jia-Li(Chinese:白嘉莉; pinyin: Bái Jiā Lì; born March 1, 1948), is a Taiwanese singer and host.[1]
Biography
Bai Jia-Li, whose ancestors have lived in Di Hua, Xinjiang[2] for generations, was born in Lanzhou, Gansu Province, and her family lives in a Military dependents' villages (Chinese: 眷村) near the Shui Nan Air Force Base in Taichung, Taiwan. When she was in high school, she quit school due to her parents' divorce and went to Taipei City to participate in a singing competition, where she entered the performing arts industry as the first prize winner. [3]Later, she signed a contract with a Taiwan Television Enterprise to host a singing program, she set a precedent for interviewing guests in English, Japanese and French, and became known as the "most beautiful program host".[4]
On December 7, 1969, TCTV (Taiwan Television Enterprise, Ltd.) tried out a self-produced color television program with "Stars on Stage"(Chinese: 群星會), which was the first live program in Taiwan's television history to try out a color program signal, and the first show to appear was "A Rose on the Long Shang" sung by Bai Jia-Li.[5]
In 1977, Bai Jia-Li married Indonesian businessman "King of Timber" Wang Sheng-An, and later faded away from the performing art business to accompany her husband to develop a new career.[6][7]
Bai Jia-Li has hosted such classic singing shows as " Stars on Stage " and "Galaxy Palace"(Chinese: 銀河璇宮) and has issued five albums: "The Endless Wine"(Chinese: 喝不完的酒), "Lovely Stranger"(Chinese: 可愛的陌生人), "Blue Streetcar"(Chinese: 藍色的街車), "See You Again in Dreams"(Chinese: 夢裡再見) and "Love in Heart"(Chinese: 愛在心裡).[8]
In January 2020, after 41 years of living in Indonesia, Bai Jia-Li released her autobiography book " Bai Jia-Li Looking Back"(Chinese: 回眸) and settled in Taiwan, planning to exhibit her paintings and engage in charity activities instead of returning to the performing arts industry.[9]
Family
Her father, Bai Quan Zuo, is a retired Air force officer in Taiwan (the Republic of China) who introduced light aircraft to Taiwan and accepted Chang Fei as his fellow. His mother has lived in Melbourne and the Gold Coast, Australia. Her sister, Bai Fei-Bi, has also worked in the entertainment industry and was a presenter and journalist for the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).
