Mr. Md. Shahjahan Kabir is the current head of this institution. It is an autonomous institution run under The ministry of Agriculture, Bangladesh. History

Bangladesh Rice Research Institute was established on October 1, 1970.[4] As of June 2019, the institute had developed 41 varieties of Aman rice.[5] Besides the headquarters at Joydebpur, 36 km north of Dhaka, where the main research programmes originate, BRRI has set up nine regional stations to conduct location-specific research at Barishal, Comilla, Bhanga, Habiganj, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sonagazi, Shatkhira and Kushtia.[4] In 2019, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation commiitted to grant approx. USD 4 million over a five year horizon, to this institute, with a goal of sustainably increasing the rate of genetic gain delivered in smallholder farmers' fields, in the form of nutritious, resilient, and market-preferred varieties.[6]
