The Bazna gas field is a natural gas field located in Bazna, Sibiu County, Romania. It was discovered in 1912 and developed by and Romgaz. It began production in 1915 and produces natural gas and condensates. The total proven reserves of the Bazna gas field are around 1.06 trillion cubic feet (30 km³), and production is slated to be around 23.8 million cubic feet/day (0.67×105m³) in 2010.[1][2]

There are numerous mentions attesting natural gas emanations in the Transylvanian Plateau.[3] The existence of natural gas in Transylvania was known since the 17th century. People in Bazna were often puzzled by "inextinguishable fires".[4] In 1671, while some shepherds at Bazna were lighting a fire, they incidentally discovered a gas inrush.[3]

The gas deposits in Romania have a very long history of exploitation, almost unique at the level of Europe and among the few such old fields that are still in production in the world.[5] Romania has important quantities of methane gas reserves, especially in the Transylvanian Depression, south and north of the Mureș River, at Puini, Zau de Câmpie, Luduș, Șincai, Bazna, Nadeș, etc,[6]Шаблон:Rp where about 75% of the Шаблон:Cvt of the country's natural gas reserves are located.[7]

In the interwar period, Romania's program of geological works and drilling was amplified, highlighting the gas deposits from Copșa Mică, Bazna, Șaroș, and Șincai.[8][9] At Bazna, natural gases were trapped by means of cones mounted above the shafts where mineral water was extracted; the gas was used to illuminate the local promenades.[3] As recorded in 1933, the gas extracted at Bazna was 97.9% methane, 1.5% acetylene, and 0.6% carbon dioxide.[10]Шаблон:Rp

In 2010, Romgaz announced that it will construct a direct road from Mediaș, where its headquarters are located, to Bazna commune, about Шаблон:Cvt to the northwest, so as facilitate access to the wells at the gas field.[11] The Romgaz company also operates in Bazna a spa complex and sports recreation center, mostly for its 6,000 employees.[12]
