Bhara Kahu Bypass is a roadway project in Islamabad, Pakistan. The objective of the project was to create an alternate route leading to Murree, Kashmir, and Galiyat.[1]

This project was proposed by the PTI government. Special assistant to Prime Minister announced in Bhara Kahoo Jalsa in November 2021. Later, the construction of this revised project started in March 2022. Mr. Khurram Nawaz Awan, the special assistant to Prime Minister on Capital Development Authority Affairs announced in a public gathering at Bhara Kahu that the work on and long-awaited Bhara Kahu Bypass has been started in March 2022 which is estimated to be finished in two years. It will eventually resolve the severe traffic jams at Bhara Kahu. Bhara Kahu Bypass would not only benefit the locals but would also facilitate the tourists heading towards and the dwellers of Murree and Azad Kashmir. The Frontier Works Organisation would be executing an agency that would carry out the work.

It was continued by the "PDM" government after the "Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf" government ended in a no-confidence vote.

History

The Bhara Kahu Bypass project was assigned as a significant task to the Capital Development Authority (CDA) by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.[2] This project served as the first major development initiative launched by the current government.[3] In September 2022, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed the CDA to expedite the operationalization of the Bhara Kahu bypass within a four-month timeline. The government entrusted the National Logistics Cell (NLC) with the responsibility of completing the project.[4]

Route Description

The construction contractor has been assigned the task of building a three-lane roadway spanning over 5 kilometers, connecting the Quaid-e-Azam University entry point to Jugi Bus Stop. The project is expected to be accomplished within a budget of Rs. 6.5 billion.[4]

Incident

on 25 February 2023, an incident took place on the Bhara Kahu Bypass. During the construction of a flyover, one of its pillars gave way, leading to the loss of two laborers' lives, while three others suffered from various injuries.[5]
