Nicknamed "Buddy", he played parts of three seasons in the majors; Шаблон:Baseball year for the St. Louis Cardinals, and Шаблон:Baseball year and Шаблон:Baseball year for the Boston Braves (renamed the Bees in 1936).

Lewis had a much longer career in the minor leagues, playing nineteen seasons between Шаблон:Baseball year and Шаблон:Baseball year. After his playing days ended, he spent the rest of his life as a scout, first for the St. Louis Cardinals and later for the New York Mets.

Lewis played for the Independence Producers in 1930. On April 28, 1930, the Producers played the first Night game in the history of Organized Baseball.
