Brigitte Shim, FRAIC, OC, RCA, Hon. FAIA, OAA (December 8, 1958) is a Canadian architect and a founding partner of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, established in 1994 with her husband, Howard Sutcliffe.[1] She is also a professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design, University of Toronto.[2] Shim and Sutcliffe formed Shim-Sutcliffe Architects to pursue their shared interest and passion for the interrelation of architecture, landscape, interior design, and industrial design. To date, the firm has received numerous accolades including 15 Governor General's Medals for architecture[3] and an American Institute of Architects National Honour Award for built work for clients ranging non-profit groups to public and private residential clients.[4]

Education and Early Career

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1958, Shim’s family immigrated to Canada in 1965.[5] She began her post secondary education at the University of Waterloo, graduating with a degree in environmental studies in 1981.[6] Upon completion of her first degree, she enrolled in architecture at Waterloo, graduating in 1983.[7] It was also at the University of Waterloo where she met Sutcliffe and the couple began working on projects together.

Between 1981 and 1987, Shim worked in the offices of influential architects Arthur Erikson and Baird Sampson Neuert Architects, before launching her academic career in 1988, accepting a teaching position at the University of Toronto.[8] That same year, Shim and Sutcliffe completed their first notable built project, Garden Pavilion and Reflecting Pool. Located in Toronto’s Don Mills neighbourhood, the concrete and steel composition was an early example of the design language the couple would become known for internationally.[9]

Shim-Sutcliffe Architects

Outlining the essence of Shim and Sutcliffe’s work in the 2021 book, Canadian Architecture, journalist and author Leslie Jen states that “Rigour and conceptual integrity are inherent in their iterative design process, and the way in which the fundamentals of light, landscape, and water are carefully wrought achieves results that are nothing short of exquisite[10].”

Elsa Lam, editor of Canadian Architect magazine, describes the significance of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects as follows: "Brigitte and Howard are first and foremost architects of a calibre rarely seen in the world, let alone in Canada. Going beyond this, they are tremendous advocates for architecture and for young architects, working behind the scenes in everything from advancing housing policies in Toronto to orchestrating public seminars for BEAT and the Daniels School of Architecture, Landscape and Design. All these activities share a common thread: the pursuit of excellence in architecture, in all of its facets.[11]"

Architecture Community Contributions

Throughout her career, Shim has been actively involved in an array of causes that uphold the importance of good design, including serving on committees, juries, and editorial boards locally and internationally.[12] Of note, she was a member of the architectural advisory board of Canada’s National Capital Commission for 8 years,[13] is an active member of Waterfront Toronto’s Design Review Panel,[14] and has been a member of both the Master Jury and Steering Committee of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.[15]

Professorship

Shim joined the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, University of Toronto in 1988, where she remains a tenured professor. She has also been a visiting lecturer at various institutions including Harvard and Yale.[16] The courses that Shim teaches range from core, advanced, and thesis design studios, to more specialized courses that explore her areas of expertise, like History and Theory of Landscape Architecture, or studies in laneway housing and urban intensification.[17]

Shim’s notable academic appointments include:[18]
