Background

President Jokowi has committed various acts of irregularities during his tenure in the fields of politics and democracy.[1] Some of these irregularities included: ethical violations at the Constitutional Court, involvement of law enforcement officials in the election process, as well as contradictory statements regarding the neutrality and involvement of public officials in political campaigns.[1][2]

On 31 January 2024, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) held an academic pulpit activity at Senate Hall which was attended by UGM academics, students, and lecturers.[3] During the event, Professor of the Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University, Koentjoro, who served as spokesperson for the Academic Platform, read Bulaksumur's petition which contained regret for the deviant acts that occurred during Jokowi's administration, who is also part of the Gadjah Mada University extended family.[3] Head of the UGM Pancasila Study Center, Agus Wahyudi, who was the initiator of the petition, said that the document was the result of dialogue between professors, lecturers and students.[1] He added that these notes were one of the accumulated documents relating to the decline of democracy in Indonesia and added that UGM had no intention of impeaching Jokowi, and only wanted to provide a warning for his actions in playing political games and violating the limits of democracy.[1] UGM also demanded that the People's Representative Council and the People's Consultative Assembly take action to deal with the political unrest that occurred during 2024 Indonesian presidential election.[4]

The petition

The document details events that have occurred in the Indonesian political sector in recent years and highlights several incidents of irregularities such as deviations from the moral principles of democracy, deviations against the people, and deviations from social justice committed by high-ranking state officials.[2] It also regrets President Jokowi's actions in allowing these irregularities to occur during his administration, thus damaging the honor of Gadjah Mada University alumni.[2] The petition was then read by Koentjoro, Professor at the Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University, accompanied by a number of professors and the Chair of the KM Student Executive Board, Gielbran M. Noor, as the student representative.[2]
