History

The Carbon Neutrality Coalition (CNC) was founded in 2017 by 16 countries and 32 cities,[4] inspired by Bhutan.[5] In December, New Zealand Climate Change Minister James Shaw said "The Coalition is a perfect fit with our goal of becoming a net zero emission economy by 2050"[6]

In September 2018 the Coalition held its first meeting at the UN General Assembly[2] and 4 new countries joined: the UK; Canada; Denmark and Spain.[7][8][3][9][10][11]

In September 2019 at the UN Climate Summit, it was announced that 5 new countries were joining the coalition: Austria, Chile, Italy, Japan and Timor-Leste.[12]
