Crystal Lucas-Perry is an American actress. She is known for her performances on Broadway acting in the musical revival of 1776 (2022), and the Jordan E. Cooper sketch-play Ain't No Mo' (2023), the later of which earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play.[1]

Education

Lucas-Perry attended both Western Michigan University, from which she graduated in 2010,[2] and New York University Tisch School of the Arts, from which she graduated in 2013.[3]

Career

Lucas-Perry was a member of the cast of Jordan E. Cooper's sketch play Ain't No Mo' for its premiere Off-Broadway in 2019.[4]

In September 2022 Lucas-Perry made her Broadway debut as John Adams in the musical revival of 1776. The production was received with negative reviews with many critics noting the choice to cast its ensemble with female, transgender or nonbinary actors, citing it as misguided and missing the spirit of the original production. The New York Times theatre critic Jesse Green wrote, "Underlining one’s progressiveness a thousand times, as this 1776 does, will not actually convey it better; rather it turns characters into cutouts and distracts from the ideas it means to promote."[5] TheWrap in particular criticized Lucas-Perry's performance, writing, "John Adams may be the biggest bore ever to be the lead character in an American musical stage...Here, Crystal Lucas-Perry plays him as straight and humorless as any male actor ever has."[6]

When Ain't No Mo' transferred to Broadway at the beginning of December, she reprised her roles in the production.[7] Lucas-Perry fared better in her second outing on Broadway playing multiple characters. Deadline Hollywood wrote positively of her performance adding, "Lucas-Perry returns later in the show in one of the most emotionally powerful of the sketches...playing [a] convict to be released from a prison."[8] Although the play failed to find an audience and was a commercial failure it received six Tony Award nominations including for Lucas-Perry who was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
