The Delhi–Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (Delhi–Meerut RRTS) is an Шаблон:Cvt long rapid rail corridor that will connect Delhi, Ghaziabad and Meerut. It is one of the three rapid rail corridors planned under Phase I of the RapidX project managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). Designed to allow a maximum speed of Шаблон:Cvt, the distance between Delhi and Meerut will be covered in less than 60 minutes. The project is being executed at a cost of Шаблон:INRConvert. It will have 14 stations and two depots at Duhai and Modipuram.[1][2][3][4]
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2019, and construction began in June 2019.[5][6] The project's first phase, or the Шаблон:Cvt-long priority corridor from Sahibabad to Duhai, was expected to become operational by March 2023.[7] However, due to pending works in some stations, especially in Ghaziabad, it got delayed. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 October 2023, and the rest of the entire Шаблон:Cvt-long corridor will be opened by June 2025.[8][9]
History
On 8 March 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the corridor.[10] Local transit services will also be provided on the Delhi-Meerut RRTS network in Meerut with Шаблон:Cvt allotted for local transit needs.[11]
The NCRTC planned for the Шаблон:Cvt long priority section between Sahibabad and Duhai to begin regular operations by March 2023.[12] The entire Шаблон:Cvt long Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is expected be operational by June 2025.[8]
Following the Galwan Valley skirmish on 15 June 2020, there were calls by Swadeshi Jagran Manch for the Government to cancel the bid of a Chinese company related to the transit system.[13][14] The trains are being made by Alstom's manufacturing plant in Savli, Gujarat.[15]
The project was chosen ahead of Delhi–Alwar and Delhi–Panipat projects due to high frequency of travellers and traffic between Delhi and Meerut, to execute the project and reduce pollution, congestion and risk of accidents.[16]
Route
Of the entire length, Шаблон:Cvt is elevated, Шаблон:Cvt is underground.[1] and Шаблон:Cvt will be at grade for connections to two depots to be located at Duhai and Modipuram. In densely populated areas of Delhi and Meerut the route will be underground including near the Yamuna river.[3] The entire route is designed for a maximum speed of Шаблон:Cvt, with an operating speed of Шаблон:Cvt.[17][18] The average speed (when taking stops into account) will be approximately Шаблон:Cvt.[18]
The Delhi-Meerut corridor starts from Sarai Kale Khan station in Delhi. The corridor will pass through areas of Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut; terminating at Modipuram in Meerut.[1][3]
Sarai Kale Khan will also become a transit hub with the Sarai Kale Khan - Nizamuddin metro station, the Sarai Kale Khan ISBT, and the Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station in vicinity.[3]
The Шаблон:Cvt long Sahibabad - Meerut South section, including Duhai Depot, is expected to become operational by January 2024, the Шаблон:Cvt Hazrat Nizamuddin - Sahibabad in January 2024 and the remaining Шаблон:Cvt Meerut South - Modipuram in July 2024.[3]
There will be a total of 14 stations.[1] Multimodal transport hubs will be combined with existing transportation such as Delhi Metro, Indian Railways, and Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) bus terminals (planned at Anand Vihar, Sahibabad and Shaheed Sthal stations).[19]

Meerut Metro
The Meerut Metro line 1 which was also supposed to be constructed has been merged to run on the same track as Delhi Meerut RRTS to save cost since, there was overlap and routes of the both the transit system.[20]
The stations in Meerut Metro are - Meerut South, Partapur, Rithiani, Shatabdi Nagar, Brahmpuri, Meerut Central, Bhaisali, Begumpul, MES colony, Daurli, Meerut North, Modipuram, Modipuram Depot.
It will also have interchanges with the RRTS system at Meerut South, Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul and Modipuram stations.[21]
Key features
- Multi-Modal Integration: RRTS stations will be integrated with various modes of transport like Airports, Railway Stations, Inter-State Bus Terminals, Delhi Metro Stations etc. It will facilitate the movement of commuters between modes.[22]
- Platform Screen Doors: All of the RRTS stations will have platform screen doors for enhanced commuter safety.[23]
- The implementation of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS Corridor is expected to shift the modal share in favour of public transport from 37% to 63% in the region, which is projected to result in a reduction in traffic.[24]
Source of funding
- Multilateral Funding: About $1 billion from Asian Development Bank (ADB), $500 million from New Development Bank (NDB) and $500 million from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).[25][26]
- Contribution from governments: From Government of India: 20%, from Government of Delhi: 3.22%, and from Government of Uttar Pradesh: 16.78%.[27]

Signalling and train control system
The NCRTC has decided to equip the line with ETCS L2 signalling. Tenders for its procurement were invited on 17 April 2020[29] and Alstom was awarded the contract worth approximately Шаблон:INRConvert in January 2021.[30]
Nokia partnered with Alstom to implement the 4.9G/LTE private wireless network to support the ETCS L2 signalling. This is the first time in the world that an LTE network is being used along with ETCS L2 signalling.[31]
Rolling stock
On 1 May 2020, Alstom (then Bombardier Transportation before it was acquired by Alstom in January 2021[32]) emerged as the lowest bidder among a group of three bidders to supply and maintain 210 coaches for a 15 year period, with a price bid of Шаблон:INRConvert. The 210 coaches include 180 coaches (30 six-car trains) for RRTS and 30 coaches (10 three-car trains) for Meerut Metro.[33][34]
In September 2020, the NCRTC first unveiled the RRTS train, the design of which is inspired by the Lotus Temple. Designed in Hyderabad, the trains have a design speed of Шаблон:Cvt and an operational speed of Шаблон:Cvt. Each fully air-conditioned, six-car trainset will be able to carry 1750 passengers and will have one premium coach and one coach reserved for women.[35][34] It is compatible with a host of train protection systems like automatic train protection (ATP) and automatic train control (ATC) systems and also has features like regenerative braking.[34]
The entire rolling stock will be manufactured in India, at Alstom's plant in Savli, Gujarat.[36][37] Manufacturing began in July 2021[38] and the first trainset was delivered to NCRTC in May 2022.[34]
