Geography
Area Overview
The map alongside shows the alluvial floodplains south of the outer foothills of the Himalayas. The area is mostly flat, except for low hills in the northern portions. It is a primarily rural area with 62.01% of the population living in rural areas and a moderate 37.99% living in the urban areas. Tea gardens in the Dooars and Terai regions annually produce 226 million kg or over a quarter of India's total tea crop. Some tea gardens were identified in the 2011 census as census towns or villages. Such places are marked in the map as CT (census town) or R (rural/ urban centre). Specific tea estate pages are marked TE.

Gram Panchayats
The subdivision contains 16 gram panchayats under 2 community development blocks[5][6]
- Dhupguri block consists of 9 gram panchayats, viz. Jharaltagram–I, Sakoyajhora–II, Salbari–II, Barogharia, Gadhearkuthi, Magurmari–I, Godong–I, Magurmari–II, Godong–II.
- Banarhat block consists of 7 gram panchayats, viz. Banarhat–I, Banarhat–II, Chamurchi, Binnaguri, Salbari–I, Sakoyajhora–I, Jharaltagram–II.
Education
- Kabi Sukanta Mahavidyalaya was established at Dhupguri (outside the CD block) in 1981.Affiliated with the University of North Bengal, it offers courses in arts and commerce.[7]
- Dhupguri Girls’ College was established at Dhupguri (outside the CD block) in 2013. Affiliated with the University of North Bengal, it offers courses in arts.[8]
- Banarhat Kartik Oraon Hindi Government College was established at Banarhat in 2014. Affiliated with the University of North Bengal, it is a Hindi-medium institution offering courses in arts and science.[9]
Healthcare
Dhupguri subdivision had 4 primary health centres, 1 central government medical institution and 9 NGO/ private nursing home with total 421 beds and 25 doctors (excluding private bodies). Dhupguri had 1 rural hospital with 70 beds and 6 doctors. It had 46 family welfare subcentres. 11,901 patients were treated indoor and 148,141 patients were treated outdoor in the hospitals, health centres and subcentres of the subdivision.
Dhupguri Rural Hospital, with 30 beds at Dhupguri, is the major government medical facility in the Dhupguri subdivision. There are primary health centres at Jhar Altargram (PO Dankanmari) (with 4 beds), Sakarjhora (PO Sajnapara) (with 4 beds), Duramari (Salbari) (with 6 beds).[10][11]
