EA Sports UFC 5 is a mixed martial arts fighting video game developed by EA Vancouver and published by EA Sports. Serving as the sequel to EA Sports UFC 4 (2020), it was released on October 27, 2023 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Gameplay

Like its predecessor, UFC 5 is a fighting game based on the mixed martial arts promotion Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). There are 229 unique fighters, with 81 alternate versions. The game features a career mode, which was designed to be an "onboarding experience" to teach the player the basics of four MMA disciplines which include boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and jiujitsu. The goal of the career mode, which allows players to create their own custom fighter, is to become the G.O.A.T. (which stands for "greatest of all time"). As players progress in the game, they can choose to accept or decline fights, which will affect the development of the fighter's career. Multiplayer modes, including Blitz Battles, and Online World Championships, would also be available. In addition to fighting in The Octagon, players can also fight in Backyard and Kumite, which resembles an underground fighting arena. New features include an improved damage system, doctor stoppages and new animations.[1]

Development

It is the second EA Sports title and the first since Fight Night Champion (2011) to receive a Mature (M) rating by the ESRB due to the game’s realistic injury system as well as stronger language in the career mode.[2] Unlike its predecessors, which were run on the Ignite engine, UFC 5 uses Frostbite.[3]

Reception

According to review aggregator Metacritic, the game received "generally positive reviews" from critics upon release. The MMA gaming community’s reception is mixed. Many fans of the series were upset that the roster in UFC 5 had no new additions upon release. Many of the options available in previous editions of the game were curiously left out in this release. The ability to clinch grapple against the cage has been removed. The ability to fully customize create-a-fighter (CAF) is no longer an option and players are forced to choose between several different "archetypes" with varying levels of attributes, stats and move sets. Apart from the new damage system and the modified submission process, the game has been deemed a "cut and paste" of the previous edition. Presentation has several issues as well. The UFC Apex venue has no fight commentary. Fighter walk outs and fighter introductions have been removed in some game modes and noticeably modified in others (i.e. fighter announcements only consist of fighter name, to save time, versus announcing their name, record, style and where they hail from) which led fans to feel a lack of immersion.[4]
