Elsbach & Frank was a textile retail business founded in the 19th century in Hanover, the capital of Lower Saxony, Germany. The department store built by this company on the corner of Шаблон:Lang and Шаблон:Lang, called Шаблон:Lang, is the only building in the city center that survived the air raids on Hanover during the Second World War without major damage.[1] Today, the building is used by a branch of the Spanish fashion chain Zara.
History
In 1889, the merchants Ferdinand Elsbach and Julius Frank founded their specialty store, initially only for men's and boys' clothing, some of which they had made in their own tailoring shop.[2]
The company expanded in 1910: The managing director Josef Adamski founded a branch in Hildesheim, Hoher Weg 8. Adamski took over this branch in 1933, which is now known as Adamski GmbH & Co. KG.[3]
In 1910-1911, the architect Rudolf Friedrich built the new Kaufhaus zum Stern department store for the main store in Hanover, which was extended in 1931.[4][1]
While one of the company's advertising slogans in 1913 was "What the young man, the man, the sportsman, the hunter and the tourist needs is on offer", this was later expanded to include women's clothing.
Ferdinand Elsbach died 1931.[5]
Nazi persecution, takeover by Otto Werner, death in Theresienstadt
When the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, the Elsbachs were persecuted and their store subject to boycotts because of their Jewish heritage. Their company was taken over by clothing retailer Otto Werner in 1933. Elbach's widow Ida was deported and died at the Nazi Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1942.[6] Their sons fled Nazi Germany.
Ferdinand's brother, Adolf, was also deported to Theresiendstadt where he died in 1943.[7]
Historian Michael Pechel compiled the history of the Jewish department stores for the Netzwerk Erinnerung und Zukunft in der Region Hannover.[8]
The company, Elsbach, founded in 1873 on Brüderstraße in Herford by the Jewish brothers Josef and Hermann Elsbach, was entered in the commercial register in 1875 as Herforder Hemdenfabrik J. Elsbach & Co.
